When the Texas Education Agency reported their accountability grades for 2018-2019 two Breckenridge Independent schools received an ‘F’ (55). Many parents did not know what went into that grade or what the school is doing to improve for the future.
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has been busy this week helping BISD students celebrate Constitution week. Earlier in the week the DAR ladies, Lisa Echols, and Mary Thompson helped at Breckenridge High School with the flag ceremony led by the FFA members from the Ag Department. Echols explained the proper protocol for the American flag coming down the aisle, which requires students and faculty to stand to honor the American flag.
The First Annual Jalapeno Popper Cookoff at the Breckenridge Trade Days was not just spicy, but exciting.
On Saturday, Sept. 21 Breckenridge Trade Day was alive with vendors and the crisp smell of jalapenos. Four different competitors battled it out in a jalapeno popper cookoff under the Trade Days barn.

Breckenridge Independent School District Interim Superintendent, Earl Jarrett, and Chief Learning Officer, Molly Johnson, have a plan to improve the accountability grades for BISD.
Interim Superintendent Jarrett stated that when he came to Breckenridge just a month ago, “There were things that were being done right and there were some things that we need to improve on,” said Jarrett, “there are systemic issues—they way you correct systemic issues is by putting processes and procedures in place that over time will make the appropriate corrections.”
Artwork and sculptures filled the room as the Stephens Memorial Hospital Foundation hosted its yearly fundraiser.
The County Commissioners Court unanimously agreed to renew the Burn Ban after Chief Calvin Chaney spoke to the group on Monday, Sept. 9.
Chief Chaney spoke about a lot of activity in the previous week and cited four grass fires, one structure fire, and 13 total calls. He stated how three of the grass fires were caused by downed power lines, igniting the dry grass. The structure fire was at the lake on Saturday night, and Chaney spoke that the house had sustained a heavy fire but was structurally intact. He recommended the burn ban remaining in place.
In their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Sept. 9, the Breckenridge Independent School Board discussed their 2018-2019 Accountability Results.
The school district received a ‘B’ on their Accountability grade but was displeased with the individual scores.
The story about the Walker-Sayle Unit did not begin when the first clients arrived in August 1994. It began much earlier in the planning stages with the Stephens County Prison Task Force led by chairman Dale Cary along with members Ward Veale, King Hoerman, Mark Martin, Stan Carstens, Bruce Curry, Dwain Tolle, Virgil Moore III, Jerry Gibson, Jerry Toland, and James C. Hestand, as early as 1989.
He answered Tim Seymore’s call, and now he is the Breckenridge Independent School District interim Superintendent. Earl Jarrett started his position on Tuesday Sept. 3 as the BISD interim Superintendent, replacing Tim Seymore who retired on Aug. 30.
A going-away party was held for Breckenridge Independent School District’s Superintendent Tim Seymore on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the district’s administration building. Seymore has been a member of the BISD team for five years.
The event took place from Wednesday morning through afternoon to allow for district staff and other residents to stop by and say their goodbyes to Seymore. Snacks and drinks were also available at the party, as well as a Dr. Seuss book that friends and co-workers were invited to sign and write a parting message.
