County commissioners keep burn ban on, approve task force with SMH

The Stephens County Commissioners Court voted to leave the burn ban on and approved various business at their Monday, July 22 meeting, including agreeing to help set up a task force with Stephens Memorial Hospital. They also allowed the Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation to lend assistance with the new rodeo arena.

SMH meets with city, county officials to discuss ambulance services

Representatives from the city of Breckenridge and Stephens County met with the Stephens Memorial Hospital board to discuss paying for the hospital’s emergency medical services at the hospital board’s regular meeting on Thursday, July 18.

Employees with Sacred Cross, the hospital’s current EMS, were also at the meeting to breakdown and explain the EMS’s costs. The hospital board also discussed their monthly finances at the meeting and laid the foundation for a task force to find out what the hospital’s biggest needs are.

Boil water notice in effect Monday, July 22›

A boil water notice was put into place for U.S. Highway 183 North from 7th Street to the end of the system, and West 7th Street from Parks Street to Harvey Road. The notice is effective Monday, July 22, according to a release from the city.

Due to a water line break from construction, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the system to notify all customers within the specified block to boil their water for at least two minutes prior to consumption, according to the release.

FCC to expand broadband access to more than 100 rural Texas counties

Almost 34,000 Texas homes are going to be receiving internet access as part of the Federal Communications Commission’s broadband expansion plan, according to a release from the FCC. This expansion will bring broadband to almost 100 counties across the state and more than 200 homes across the Stephens, Throckmorton, Palo Pinto and Shackelford County area.

BISD approves staff compensation plan, sets date for public hearing on tax rate

The Breckenridge Independent School District passed their staff compensation plan for the upcoming budget at their regular meeting on Monday, July 15. They also passed several measures in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Other items included approving employee and student handbooks, approving a date for the public hearing regarding this year’s tax rate, and discussion about electricity contract bids.

Boil water notice for several roads in Breckenridge put into effect›

 

A boil water notice for all of Cactus Cove, Pembrook, Pembrook Street, Morningside Drive, Culver Road, Medina Court, Gaston Court and Northglenn Road, was put into effect on Tuesday, July 16, according to a release from the city.

Due to a water line break from construction, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has required the system to notify all customers within the specified block to boil their water for at least two minutes prior to consumption, according to the release.

Rodeo arena to be rebuilt

The Stephens County Rodeo Arena is going to be rebuilt after the rodeo board secured almost half of the money needed from the Stephens County Commissioners Court. With details of the arena getting ironed out and plans being set, the board will continue to fundraise and are aiming for a launch date in fall of this year.

Debbie Karl with TSTC wins Avery Staff Award

Debbie Karl, the Associate Provost for the Texas State Technical College’s Breckenridge Campus, was recently awarded the Avery Staff Award of Excellence for her work and services. 

Karl said winning the award took her by surprise. When they were listing out qualities and roles the winner has, she thought they were referring to another particular individual.

“In hearing them describe this person, I had someone else in mind at another campus,” Karl said. “I was expecting to hear her name. So it was a shock when I heard my name.”
