With a passion for public service in his blood, Stephens County Constable Wayne McMullen followed in his father, Roger McMullen’s footsteps in serving the county and the city. Stephens County and its public servants who served alongside McMullen, the first responder community and McMullen’s family are mourning the loss of one of their own.

Since joining the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce in October of 2023, Maylun VanWinkle has served as front desk executive assistant as well as event manager. After serving as event manager since November, VanWinkle has now been named the new executive director of the chamber as Yuri Huntington’s replacement.
Breckenridge FFA member MacKenzie Cloud recently earned a $10,000 scholarship from Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo In March. She was awarded the scholarship for her performance in the calf scramble program at the 2024 FWSSR.
The construction on the west side of the city was completed by the Texas Department of Transportation’s Brownwood District last week, as the infrastructure continues to improve. Crews wrapped up the work on the intersection of US 180 West and FM 3099 near Walmart last week, with the south side of the farm to market road being open to traffic last Tuesday, April 15. A day or two later, the traffic signals at the intersection turned from blinking red lights - to be treated as a four-way stop sign - to a fully operational traffi c light.
Now that he has been in the position for a full year, as of yesterday, April 22, Breckenridge Police Chief Blake Johnson took the time to reflect on all the happenings of the Breckenridge Police Department and the community over that time.
The question that the city of Breckenridge is asking itself regarding the fire station, “To demolish or not to demolish.” That question was once again a sticking point as the city commission met during a special meeting Wednesday, April 16 as a follow- up to the Tuesday, April 1 meeting. After a lengthy back-andforth discussion, which included several public comments from people on both sides of the argument, the commission ultimately voted to pause the demolition of the existing facility and to move forward with finding funding to build a new fire station on any location.
The Early Head Start program for Region 14 will no longer be offered by Breckenridge ISD. However, the program may still be offered in the community, just not through the school district.
The annual Stephens County Frontier Days will be taking place next weekend, beginning at noon Saturday, May 2 until 11 p.m. Saturday, May 3 at Breckenridge City Park.
