Miss Breckenridge donates to Cafe of Love

This year’s Miss Breckenridge, MacKenzie Cloud presented a donation to the Cafe of Love at First Methodist Church of Breckenridge. 

The donation was made with funds raised during this year’s Miss Breckenridge Pageant which took place during Frontier Days in May.

SMH votes to adopt budget, tax rate for upcoming year

The Stephens Memorial Hospital Board of Directors voted to officially adopt a budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal and tax years. The vote took place following a public hearing Thursday, Aug. 29 at the hospital’s O.C. Heairren Annex.

Preparations underway for next phase of roads project

A bid has been approved for phase 1 of 2024 road paving improvements. Breckenridge City Commissioners approved a bid last week during their Tuesday Sept. 3 meeting.

City commissioners approved a base bid of $2,405,233.20 from Raydon Inc. for the mid-term street projects that were previously announced last year. 

The mid-term plan was for a series of road projects to begin this fall and continue over the next four years. 
Raydon’s bid beat out a bid of $3,877,956.75 from JR West Texas Concrete.

County lifts burn ban

Burning activities are allowed to resume in the county.

Stephens County commissioners voted Monday, Sept. 9 to lift the ban which had been in place since late June.

Stephens County Constable and Fire Marshal Wayne McMullen spoke to county commissioners and stated that it was his advice to lift the ban.

“My recommendation is that we take the burn ban off,” McMullen said. “With the rainfall we had and the lower temperatures, I think we can have it off. Let’s let the farmers and ranchers get done the things they need to get done.”

The Breckenridge City Commission voted to adopt the proposed tax rate and budget for the upcoming fiscal years.

City lowers tax rate, increases salaries

The Breckenridge City Commission voted to adopt the proposed tax rate and budget for the upcoming fiscal years.

Commissioners voted to approve the proposed rate of $1.04471 per $100 valuation.

City Manager Cynthia Northrop briefly reviewed the budget during the following a public hearing during the commission’s meeting Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The budget for fiscal year 2025 includes a $262,695.58 cost of living adjustment for city employees.

County schedules budget, tax hearings

County commissioners are set to hold a public hearing regarding a proposed tax increase for the 2024 tax year.

A public hearing will take place Monday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. in the district courtroom of the Stephens County Courthouse, located at 200 West Walker St. in Breckenridge.

During the court’s Monday, Aug. 26 meeting, commissioners approved to propose a tax rate of $0.67280 per $100 valuation.  This is up from $0.6398 per $100 valuation that was approved for the 2023 tax year by commissioners last year, a 5.16% increase.

BISD adopts new budget,tax rate for upcoming fiscal year

Breckenridge ISD has officially adopted a new budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal and tax year. District trustees voted following a public hearing on Thursday, Aug. 29.

For the 2024 tax year, trustees voted to adopt a tax rate of $0.7575 per $100 valuation. This matches the tax rate approved by trustees last year for the 2023 tax year. Despite the same tax rate, there will be an average decrease of $3.77 on the tax bill for the district and the rate is considered a tax decrease.

TDCJ, county to partner on courthouse projects

When Texas Department of Criminal Justice Walker Sayle Unit Senior Warden Brian Pollock gave a community update last month, Pollock said he wanted to see inmates performing community service. Stephens County recently reached an agreement with the unit for projects around the Stephens County Courthouse.

County commissioners met Monday, Aug. 19 with TDCJ Sergeant Kord Trammel to discuss a project which will see inmates performing various tasks around the courthouse. 

A pair of county commissioners will see challengers from write-in candidates in the November election.

Satterwhite, Jones seeking county seats as write-ins

A pair of county commissioners will see challengers from write-in candidates in the November election.


Houston Satterwhite and Chad Jones have filed and will participate in the election as write-in candidates. The November election will take place Tuesday, Nov. 5.
