National Theatre prepares for upcoming Performance Series

After a successful return to the stage in the 2023-2024 season, the stage is set for 2024-2025 with the announcement of the next National Theatre Performance Series. 

The Friends of Historical Breckenridge organization has announced the next slate of performers scheduled to hit the stage for the upcoming series.

Battle of the Badges

Earlier this summer the community came out in support of each other and local first responders with the Battle of the Badges blood drive. The votes have been tallied and this year’s winner was announced last week at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Breckenridge.

Carter BloodCare representative Colleen Horan visited the Rotary Club during its meeting Tuesday, Aug. 20 and declared the Breckenridge Fire Department as winner of the 2024 Battle of the Badges. Texas Brigades migrate home to Woodson

Perhaps you have heard of the original “Bobwhite Brigade.” Add to that the Buckskin Brigade, Bass Brigade, Waterfowl Brigade, Coastal Brigade, and finally, the Ranch Brigade, since the inception of the “Texas Brigades” in 1993. These five-day camps that build youth leaders are held across the state of Texas annually from Santa Anna to Galveston.

Colt Nelson, a junior at Woodson HS, attended the Ranch Brigade this summer. After forming their “herd,” he and his team worked together to accomplish the goals of the week.

BISD continues work on budget

Breckenridge ISD will host a public hearing later this month to give the public opportunity to speak in favor or against the proposed budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year.

The district took part in a brief budget workshop session during the BISD Board of Trustees’ meeting Monday, Aug. 12 where BISD Interim Superintendent Prairie Freeman gave trustees an update on the budget timeline and discussed the proposed tax rate for the 2024 tax year.

According to the district’s tax notice, which can be found on page 8, the hearing will be held at noon Thursday, Aug. 29.

Local scout hopes to make improvements on veterans memorial

One local boy scout is looking to make a lasting impact in Stephens County with a updates and improvements to a memorial in Stephens County.

Scouts BSA Troop 63 member Kason Burchett spoke to commissioners during their Monday, Aug. 12 meeting seeking permission to refurbish and improve the Stephens County Veterans Memorial located on the southwest courthouse lawn.

Three Breckenridge residents are currently in jail in Oklahoma on child abuse charges. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Breckenridge Police Department.

Three Breckenridge residents are currently in jail in Oklahoma on child abuse charges. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Breckenridge Police Department.

BPD has been assisting with the investigation since Wednesday, July 31.

“Because (suspects are from) here there’s always the belief that (Breckenridge) is the origin of where (the abuse) would occur,” Breckenridge Police Chief Blake Johnson said. “What they’re looking for from us is to provide some type of historical information or potential violations that occurred in our jurisdiction.”

SMH releases proposed tax rate

Stephens Memorial Hospital has announced its approved proposed tax rate for the upcoming year. The rate comes after area taxing entities received their final certified values from the Stephens County Appraisal District.

The proposed tax rate for the upcoming tax year is $0.22944 per $100 valuation.

BHS livestreams to expand during football season

Breckenridge High School will have expanded coverage this season as the BHS Livestream Media Team prepares to take its show on the road during the 2024 football season. 

BHS Director of Sports Information and Livestream Media Productions Calvin Best spoke with the Rotary Club of Breckenridge during their Tuesday, Aug. 6 meeting to introduce the team’s plans for the upcoming football season and other events throughout the year.

City proposes budget, tax rate for upcoming fiscal year

As the city of Breckenridge prepares for the upcoming fiscal and tax years, commissioners have voted for an proposed tax rate and set a public hearing for later this month to hear public hearing before an adoption vote.

A public hearing has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27. City commissioners voted to approve the proposed tax rate of $1.04471 per $100 of valuation. This includes the debt rate of $0.28309. The maintenance and operation portion of the rate is $0.76162.
