New city park playground equipment nears completion

The parks project in the city of Breckenridge is expected to take a big step forward this week with the upcoming completion of the new playground equipment at the city park.

The new playground marks the third completed improvement in a series of improvements planned for parks in the city.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is expected to be scheduled later this week.

BISD reviews TAPR report

Breckenridge ISD held a public hearing Monday, Feb. 12 regarding their 2022-2023 Texas Academic Performance Report from the Texas Education Agency.

BISD Superintendent Bryan Allen and BISD Chief Academic Officer Prairie Freeman gave brief remarks with no members of the public making comments.

City votes to continue BPD chief hiring process

The hiring process for a new police chief continued last week after Breckenridge City Commissioners unanimously voted to continue the process rather than engage in negotiations with Stephens County to expand the interlocal agreement regarding area policing.

The city met in a special meeting Thursday, Feb. 22 to listen as City Manager Cynthia Northrop presented the pros and cons of expanding the agreement that would have seen the Breckenridge Police Department merge with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office with SCSO taking on full policing duties inside the city limits.

Williams pleads guilty to four felony charges

A Breckenridge man will face four concurrent sentences after pleading guilty Thursday, Feb. 15 in the 90th Judicial District Court.

James Logan Williams, 27, was sentenced after pleading guilty to two felony drug charges and two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact.

As part of the plea agreement, Williams was sentenced to two 10-year sentences in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division. For the two drug charges, Williams was sentenced to two 18-month sentences in state jail.

Chambers sentenced in child pornography case

A Breckenridge man was sentenced to 10 years of deferred adjudication community supervision Thursday, Feb. 15 in the 90th Judicial District Court after pleading guilty to the felony charge of possession of child pornography with intent to promote.

Ashton Conner Chambers, 19, will also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

In the criminal complaint filed Feb. 18, 2023, Breckenridge Police Department received a cyber tip referral from the Dallas Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Division regarding “apparent” child pornography.

No bond election in May

The deadline for the Breckenridge ISD Board of Trustees to call for a bond election passed Friday, Feb. 16 with trustees deciding against calling for one in the May election.

Parkhill Architects and Live Oak Public Financing have been working with a 31-member with a citizen’s advisory committee to develop a long-term facility plan.

Early voting begins Tuesday, Feb. 20 for the upcoming primary elections. Voting will take place at the Stephens County Courthouse.

Early voting begins Tuesday, Feb. 20 for the upcoming primary elections. Voting will take place at the Stephens County Courthouse.

The first week of early voting will begin Tuesday, as Monday, Feb. 19 is President’s Day, a federal holiday. Voting will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Feb. 23.

Weekend hours for early voting will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 and 1-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25.
The final week of early voting will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 26-March 1.

Election day is Tuesday, March 5. Voting will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Interim BPD chief introduced

Breckenridge City Manager Cynthia Northrop introduced the Breckenridge Police Department interim Police Chief Tommy Williams during last week’s Breckenridge City Commission meeting.

Last month, the city of Breckenridge entered into a contract with Strategic Government Resources to bring in a police chief on an interim basis at the cost of $85 per hour.
