Breckenridge, Woodson FFA compete in area contest

Breckenridge and Woodson FFA competed Monday, Nov. 20 at the Area IV Leadership Development Contest. The contest included 100 schools from 1A through 6A competing for an opportunity to compete at the state contest at Sam Houston State University.

Woodson FFA sent 24 students in seven teams to the contest in Abilene. Breckenridge was represented by Cabel Perkins, Jack McKay and Miley Roberts, who advanced to the area contest in the Senior Skills competition. Breckenridge finished fourth.

Allen gives bond update

Breckenridge ISD superintendent Bryan Allen gave an update on a possible bond election for the district.

A citizens advisory committee has been formed with two members nominated from each of the BISD board members. The group has been working to come up with solutions to repair or replace aging infrastructure in the district.

BISD explore district technology upgrades

Vince Moore and Kelly Martin of the Breckenridge ISD technology department spoke Monday, Nov. 13 to the BISD Board of Trustees and gave the board an update as the two work to upgrade the district’s network infrastructure.

Martin said they are in the process of replacing each of the district internet switches. Also known as an ethernet switch, this works to connect several devices to the district’s local area network. Martin said the district experience switch failure on nearly a daily basis.

City commissioners approve new logo, branding

Breckenridge city leaders have revealed a new look and message for the community. Breckenridge City Commissioners voted Tuesday, Nov. 7 to approve a new logo for the city. The new logo will go with a new campaign the city is working on in an effort for a new branding message.

Commissioners were presented four logos for consideration by designer Katherine Parker Post, of Katherine Parker Designs, who spoke at the meeting with Selah Hirsch, of Express My Brand. Post and Hirsch spoke to commissioners through a conference call about their design concept.

4-H competes at first livestock judging

Stephens County 4-H competed for the first time at the District 3 Livestock Judging Contest last week. The event was held Wednesday, Nov. 8 in Vernon.

The organization sent 12 students and three teams to the contest.

The Junior Team, made up of Evelyn Halaryi, Berkley White, Krawford Kennedy, Wyatt Burns, and Carder McClymond, finished in 3rd place overall.

Individually, Halaryi finished in 7th, White in 8th, McClymond in 29, Krawford in 36th and Burns in 37th, out of 74 competitors.

Voting took place statewide Tuesday, Nov. 7. Although there were no local races on the ballot, Stephens County voters mirrored the state vote, approving 13 out of 14 constitutional amendments.

State, county voters approve Proposition 4

Voting took place statewide Tuesday, Nov. 7. Although there were no local races on the ballot, Stephens County voters mirrored the state vote, approving 13 out of 14 constitutional amendments.

This includes Proposition 4, which had a local interest due to its effects on the homestead tax exemption.
According to the Stephens County Tax Office, 16.83% of registered voters cast votes for last week’s election.
On election day, 545 voters showed up to cast their votes, with 421 voters voting early or via mail-in ballot.

BEDC adds murals to facade grant program

Selected murals in Breckenridge will be getting much-needed face-lifts in the near future.

The Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation has announced an expansion to its facade grant program to include murals in an effort to further beautify downtown Breckenridge and to attract more businesses and visitors to the area.

Cornwall appointed as new county treasurer

For the second time in two weeks, the Stephens County Commissioners Court has appointed a new county treasurer.
Commissioners, during a special meeting called Monday, Nov. 6, voted to rescind the previous appointment of Mary O’Dell and voted to appoint Kelsey Cornwall as the new Stephens County Treasurer.

O’Dell’s appointment was rescinded after receiving additional guidance last week from the county’s outside council, Jim Allison of Allison, Bass & Magee.

County to rescind treasurer's appointment

Stephens County Judge Michael Roach announced today the Stephens County Commissioners Court will be rescinding the appointment of Mary O’Dell as Stephens County Treasurer. The decision was made following further guidance from the outside council.
