BISD board meets in special session

The Breckenridge ISD Board of Trustees met in a special session Thursday, June 3, to provide the oath of office to a new board member and hear presentations related to the review of a Chapter 313 application.

Jimmy McKay, who was appointed to Place 4 by the board on May 10, was sworn in by Brittany Edgar. This seat was initially held by Cody Wimberley, who recently resigned.

The other new BISD board member, Chad Townson, was sworn in at an earlier board meeting.

TWC releases guidance to help protect against identity theft

The Texas Workforce Commission in May offered ways for Texans to protect themselves against identity theft due to a wave of criminal elements attempting to fraudulently obtain unemployment benefits from state residents.

According to TWC, none of their systems have been breached, but criminals are using identities stolen from Texans to perpetrate fraud which is part of a broader trend across the country of ID thieves targeting state unemployment benefits.

Meals on Wheels program needing volunteers

The Meals on Wheels program in Breckenridge is in need of volunteers to help deliver meals to senior citizens who are homebound.

Currently, there are 18 volunteers to deliver 75 meals to seniors weekly, on Tuesday and Thursday.

The meals are put together at the Stephens Memorial Hospital kitchen and then picked up and distributed to the senior citizens.

Peggy Holder is in charge of the program and has the deliveries set up for five routes.

Texas Gov. Abbott signs two bills in response to winter storms

After winter storms wreaked havoc on the Texas power grid and caused many residents to go days without electricity during periods of extremely low temperatures, Gov. Greg Abbott signed two bills into law last Tuesday aiming to improve the state’s main power grid and make changes within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

County experiences severe flooding

Stephens County called an emergency meeting Tuesday, June 1 after widespread flooding impacted the Stephens County area due to heavy rainfall causing Lake Daniel and area creeks and tanks to overflow.

On Monday, May 31, County Judge Michael Roach issued a disaster declaration for the county, due to the flooding that had affected roads, bridges, homes and businesses. Judge Roach requested assistance from Texas Governor Greg Abbott to aid the county with the damage caused by the flooding.

BHS graduates Class of 2021

Families gathered for the milestone of the Class of 2021 graduation ceremony at the Breckenridge Athletic and Fine Arts Center Friday, May 28.

There were 33 honor graduates in the class of 79 students, who were led by Valedictorian, Jonas Israel Arellano, and Salutatorian, Evan James Moore. Both received scholarships for their honors from First National Bank and Breckenridge InterBank, respectively.

Commissioners discuss new homes, fire department changes

Breckenridge City Commissioners met Tuesday, June 1 with one of the newest commissioners, Vince Moore taking charge of running the meeting, in the absence of Mayor Bob Sims.

Commissioners approved a change offered by the Planning and Zoning Committee, from a request by Billy Cook, who requested a zoning change from C-3 (general business) to MH (mobile home dwellings) for Section 7, Tract NE/4, for 6 acres in the Breckenridge city limits.

End of school activities for elementary students

First and second graders from East Elementary took turns at the City Park and the National Theatre. Both groups had lunch at park and then went the theater to watch “The Incredibles.”

East Elementary took Wednesday to have their water day activities, with snow cones and lemonade.

South Elementary students had to wait on the morning rain to subside before they converged on the track for their relay races for third, fourth and fifth grade teams set to run.

Commissioners approve county contracts

The Stephens County Commissioners met Monday, May 26 and discussed several county contracts.

The county voted to approve the purchase of a new 2021 Chevrolet pickup, as requested by Sheriff Kevin Roach.

Sheriff Roach said a deputy had wrecked a vehicle, causing the department to be a vehicle short. The Stephens County Sheriff’s office is partnered with Buy Board, which is a procurement program. Two dealers were listed in the area and Stephens County Sheriff’s office was able to procure the truck at a discounted price.

Permitless carry bill heads to Gov. Abbott for state approval

Texas is set to become the 21st state to allow the lawful carry of a handgun, concealed or openly, without a license after the Senate and House approved the measure in the 87th Legislative Session.

House Bill 1927 was approved by the House Sunday, May 23, and approved by the Senate Monday, May 24. The bill was sent to the office of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott who stated he will sign off on the bill making it a law in the state. A final draft was negotiated with the house which made three changes to the bill approved by the Senate.
