Street takeover spurs government action

Capital Highlights Gov. Greg Abbott has created a statewide task force after several “street takeovers” recently took place in Austin in which motorists obstructed intersections, shot off fireworks and drove recklessly.

Public attendance encouraged at community workshop

The city of Breckenridge will hold a strategic planning and community workshop meeting next Monday, Feb. 27 at the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce, at 100 West Elm Street. The meeting will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and all members of the community are invited to attend.

Storm spotter training scheduled for March 1

The 2023 spring severe weather season is not too far away, and the National Weather Service and local public safety officials want you to be ready. The Fort Worth NWS offi ce will be conducting a free severe weather training class for Stephens County from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

BISD discusses TAPR, STAAR test changes

Breckenridge ISD held a public hearing last Wednesday regarding their 20212022 Texas Academic Performance Report from the Texas Education Agency. The board spoke on issues regarding STAAR performance and the district’s plans moving forward during the Wednesday, Feb. 15 meeting.

MT7 Ranch receives official Texas historical marker

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized “Sam Bass and Gang in Stephens County” as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker. The designation honors local law enforcement and citizen ranchers who ran outlaw Sam Bass and his gang members out of eastern Stephens County in early summer 1878 as an important part of Texas history.

Station resumes regular hours

After staffing issues caused the Breckenridge Convenience Station’s hours to be limited, the city resumed normal operating hours yesterday. In late December, the city announced that the convenience station would only be open from 9 a.m.

City provides US Hwy. 183 project update

Stephens County and the city of Breckenridge have received many questions regarding delays on the project on US Hwy. 183 North, which is maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation. Both entities have been in communication with TxDOT over the last year, with the area engineer attending Breckenridge City Commission meetings over the past several months to provide updates. The city provided an update last Thursday, Feb. 9.
