BISD approves four-day school week

Breckenridge ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously last Tuesday to move forward with changing from a five-day school week, to a four-day school week, adding to the growing statewide trend. The change will go into effect in August for the 2023-2024 school year.

Woodson VFD expands with surplus military truck

Woodson Volunteer Fire Department received a surplus military vehicle, provided by the Texas A&M Forest Service through the Department of Defense Fire Firefighter Property Program. The department also received a $20,000 grant through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program to install a slip-on unit to the truck.

Dr. Goodall’s House seeking mentors for area students

The nonprofit organization Dr. Goodall’s House in Breckenridge, a subsidiary of Virginia’s House in Graham, is seeking volunteers for its mentor program to help children and young teens. Mentors in the program provide the mentee with a strong and exemplary role model, instill pride and self-esteem and help to broaden their achievements in their life.

BISD school board recognized by students

January is School Board Recognition Month. During the regular scheduled school board meeting Thursday, Jan. 19, students from each school in the district presented board members with gifts, including t-shirts, cookies, dinner, invitations to be guest readers and even a dinner prepared and served prior to the meeting.

Border security, tax relief, raises top list

For the Texas House and Senate, there is not much daylight between each chamber’s priorities in this year’s legislative session. Leaders say the focus will be on property tax relief, border security and employee raises. Preliminary budgets from both chambers were released last week, the Austin American- Statesman reported, with a record $288.7 billion budget for the next two years. The money in the budget is made up of $93.7 billion in federal funds, $130.1 billion in state general revenue funds, and $64.9 billion in other funds.

Gas prices see another increase across state

Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 10.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.01/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 41.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 2.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has risen 2.6 cents in the last week and stands at $4.60 per gallon.

Four-day school week approved for 2023-2024 school year

Breckenridge ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to move forward with changing from a five-day school week, to a four-day school week, adding to the growing statewide trend. The change will go into effect in August for the 2023-2024 school year. No members from the community attended for public comment during the special meeting held Tuesday, Jan. 27.
