Feed My Lambs meal program to continue

Thu, 07/13/2017 - 4:44 pm

In 2010, the women of the First United Methodist Church in Breckenridge, known as WinGS (Women in God’s Service) identified a need in the community after BISD ends its free lunch program in June each year, particularly for elementary age kids who received those free lunches.  April Lechner picked up the program the first year. Initially, the WinGS group made 50 sack lunches and took them to the housing areas and handed them out to whoever wanted them. Gradually, a list materialized and they got more organized about distributing to the kids in need, as identified by counselors at the three elementary schools. The WinGS group also got some more help from the other churches in town . By the end of that first summer, they were distributing more than 75 lunches daily.

As the years have gone by, the listing has increased and by the end of last summer, 150 sack lunches were being prepared daily and distributed to kids in our community. The sack lunches include a sandwich, fruit drink, chips and fresh fruit or cookies.
