Buckaroos enter final phase of offseason

Thu, 07/13/2017 - 4:50 pm

Members of the Breckenridge High School football team hope to get the most of their final weeks of offseason conditioning.

The Buckaroos returned to the gym following the fourth of July holiday and will have just a few weeks before the first day of two-a-day practices.

“We’re a big weight room team, we live in there,” Breckenridge football coach and athletic director Casey Hubble said. “We’re not about strength as much as we are building explosive power. We want functional movement and speed. We’re constantly trying to gain an edge.”

Hubble said he wishes he had a larger turnout, but   is excited to see seniors Terrance Roberson and Riley Durham, who he said are a constant presence at each session.

“Riley hasn’t missed a single lift this summer and Terrance has missed a couple, but we expect them to miss a couple. We want them to have a summer,” Hubble said. “Our philosophy is that if you’re in town, then let’s get our work done in the morning ... Those two guys have definitely exemplified that.”

Roberson said he has made a lot of progress in the weight room, but needs to improve his speed before the first snap of the season.

“The group out here cares, they’re here,” Roberson said. “It effects us a lot, our chemistry as well. The whole team is up here working and they know each other and what we’ve been through. At the end of the game, there is no doubt, we think we’re going to win.”

While Roberson looks to use summer conditioning to continue making a name for himself in his final high school season, freshman Jonas Arellano looks to impress coaches and players he admires.

“I’m just trying to show the coaches what I can do,” Arellano said. “... Weight lifting makes you stronger physically and mentally. Sometimes you want to quit, but you keep on going and sometimes you do quit or fail and put it behind you and keep on going. It’s tiring, but [the upperclassmen] have shown me a lot. They’re kind of my role models.”

The Buckaroos open the season Sept. 1, but will host Jacksboro August 18 for their first team scrimmage.
