Buckaroos to debut new offense against Jacksboro

Fri, 08/18/2017 - 5:16 pm

The Breckenridge High School football team will face its first test of the year Friday in a scrimmage against Jacksboro.

With the Buckaroos implementing a new, spread offense this season, Breckenridge coach Casey Hubble said he will have a very simple approach to Friday’s  6:30 p.m. p.m. scrimmage at Buckaroo Stadium.

“We have a long way to go, on both sides of the ball, but we’re making progress and that is what you have to do — make progress week by week,” Hubble said. “As coaches we call each other and we’re very honest and say, here’s what we’re going to do, and at least have an idea of where you’re going to line up and what offense or defense you’re going to see. Really, it will come down to a few things, the linemen and assignment, the execution and effort. Those are the three things we’re going to look for.”

Although facing a perrenial small 3A playoff contender in Jacksboro, a team with many similarities to season opening opponent, Hubble said his main goal Friday is to evaluate his players in an atmosphere that is as close to a regular season game as possible.

“There is some comparison (to Cisco), but we always try to just focus on ourselves, look at our guys and what they’re doing,” Hubble said. “If they’re doing everything they need to do and they’re winning or losing individual battles, that is all that matters ... Those kids are in charge of their technique and that is what we will focus on more than anything else. It’s going to be that way when we get into the regular season. We’re going to focus on us and be the best that we can be.”

As for the players, such as sophomore linebacker  Jacob Escalon and senior linebacker Chucky Perez, they just look forward to finally hitting someone that is not a teammate.

“I’m excited. We’re practicing and going fast,” Perez said. “We’re used to [the new offense]. Jacksboro is going to have to catch on or get left behind. It’s going to help us a lot this year.”
