BISD approves purchase of three buses

Wed, 09/20/2017 - 12:03 pm

The Breckenridge Independent School District Board of Trustees approved purchasing three off-lease school buses for $172,300 from National Bus Sales last Monday.

Tim Seymore, BISD superintendent, said this was made possible with an increased annual revenue and should go into circulation within the next few weeks.

“We were able to purchase these buses because we got additional revenue this year,” Seymore said. “Over the last two years, property value decline has caused revenue to be withheld from the state. Values going up slightly this year allows us a catch-up year and we get some of that lost revenue back.”

Seymore said two of the three buses are $59,900, 72-passenger, 2015 model International diesels, which will replace two travel buses.

Seymore said the third bus is a $52,500, 47-passenger, 2012 model International diesel, with the intent to replace a similar bus.

“This catch-up revenue is a one-year thing. We may not have the money available next year, as we do not know what property values will bring,” he added.

Along with purchasing the buses, the board also approved appointing Breckenridge High School students Makenna Moser and Maria Alvarado to serve on the School Health Advisory Council for the 2017-18 school year.

The SHAC is a board-appointed group representing a variety of community areas that meet semi-annually to discuss health issues, recommend health education curriculum, and approve school health programs. The appointment is the first time a member of the BHS student body has been a part of SHAC.

The board also:

• Heard each elementary school principal announce his or her student of the week. The students selecting include: Kiptyn Escalon of East Elementary, Melissa Palacios of North Elementary and Alyssa Phelps of South Elementary.

• Rescheduled its Oct. 9 meeting to the 16th at 6:30 p.m.
