Snyder rallies back for four-set victory over Lady Bucks

The Breckenridge High School volleyball team overcame a deep deficit against Snyder, but could not maintain its momentum in the later sets, leading to a 3-1 loss Saturday. 

The Lady Tigers blistered Breckenridge 25-13 in the first set, but the Lady Buckaroos rallied  to take the second set 25-23 only to fall in the third and four sets 25-22 and 25-17 respectively.

“We weren’t really warm in the first set,” senior middle blocker Mackenna Moser said. “We knew we were better and we realized that and came out stronger in the second set.”

The Lady Buckaroos were in trouble after giving up a 3-point advantage early, eventually falling behind 5-6. A pair of aces by junior setter McKenly Roberts seemed to turn the tide, then a pair of kills by sophomore outside hitter Madison Stanley shifted the momentum in the Lady Bucks’ favor. Snyder rallied again, but a kill by Stanley and another by senior outside hitter Cameron Nicklas allowed the Lady Bucks to pull away. A net error by Snyder set up match point, which senior middle blocker Calista Lambert quickly capitalized on with a kill to end the set with a 25-23 win.

“We have a hard time setting the pace, but that time we brought our energy up and we got the momentum,” Moser said. “When we got discouraged, our teammates picked each other up and fought back.”

The Lady Buckaroos’ luck came to an end in the third and fourth sets. With the loss, as well as Monday’s loss to Hawley, the Lady Buckaroos fall to 4-16 and next face top-ranked 2A state contender Archer City before opening district play next Tuesday, Sept. 19, against Clyde.

“We made some incredibly hard plays,” Breckenridge coach Jeane Yarbrough said. “We saved some stuff and had really long vollies. A lot of them we won, which I was really pleased with. A couple of them we would have had the play but we do something silly like a net error

With district play just around the corner, Yarbrough said her players are ready and a tough pre-district schedule helped.

“I’m hoping it comes together at the right time,” Yarbrough said. “That has been my intention all season and it seems like it’s happening.”
