Lady Bucks XC take second at district race

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 3:36 pm

The Breckenridge High School Lady Buckaroo Cross Country Team will advance to the regional meet after taking second place at the District 7 Meet in Eastland.

The Lady Buckaroos were just 22 points behind district champion Brock, which Breckenridge Coach Kim Dieterich said could have been a championship performance.

“There were a couple of spots where there were three Brock girls and a group of two (Breckenridge runners). If we could have gotten one person in there to break up each one of those, then we could have given them a run for their money.”

Junior runner Mawnika Wright (13:34.12) took the bronze medal after finishing 25 seconds behind the Cisco sophomore champion Landri Edgar. Dieterich said it was great watching Wright run the course at full strength considering the last time she attempted it she suffered an asthma attack.

“She had her inhaler and she took it before she left,” Dieterich said. “When she went to take another puff, it was all out … She was strong the whole race (at district). She did an awesome job and I was really proud of that.”

Freshman Riegen Robertson followed 30 seconds later to finish ninth with a time of 14:13.31.

“We were really looking forward to her coming up this year. She’s a strong runner and getting stronger. The hills are helping her. Her and Evan are both little and Mawnika has a lot of leg length so she has to run tough.”

As for the boys, freshman Evan Moore was the only Buckaroo to advance to the regional race. Moore finished ninth with a time of 19:20.72, which Dieterich said was a minute slower than his previous race at Eastland in September. She chalked it up to a strong headwind, which she said affected all of the male runners.

“Evan did a really good job and our district is really tough, especially on the boys side,” Dieterich said. “… It was going to be tough for us and we all had to be on the same page to get at least in the top three and I thought we would at least get third, but everybody ran good that day. The boys were a little off on their game that day, but I was proud of Evan for stepping up. Even if you’re the top runner at district, nerves hit.”

Moore and the entire Lady Buckaroos team will have until Oct. 23 to prepare for the AAA Region 1 Meet in Lubbock and Dieterich said her team will need all of the time to prepare that they can get.

“Our course in our region is very tough. Region 1 is nearly the toughest region of all four,” Dieterich said. “Our course is as tough or tougher than the state course. You have about 120 meters and you’re straight up hill. If you don’t get out and get a good spot, there is not really a good spot to pass. You’re kind of stuck. The first mile is pretty much up hill.”
