Bucks crush Bowie 32-6 (complete story)

The Breckenridge High School football team remains undefeated in district play after crushing the Bowie Jackrabbits 32-6.

The Jackrabbits jumped out an early 6-0 lead, taking advantage of their fast-tempo, no huddle offense, but Breckenridge linebacker Warren Hardy said the defense made a few adjustments to hold Bowie scoreless for the rest of the game. 

“We just went with our instincts, just our feet and eyes, and did our job,” Hardy said. “Everyone just had to do their job and everything came out good. It wasn’t bad at all.”

While the defense held firm through the remaining three quarters, the offense struggled until the final drive of the first half, which ended with senior running back/receiver Lonnie Hinson dragging a few defenders into the end zone as time expired. An extra point by junior kicker Jose Escobedo gave the Buckaroos their first and only lead of the game as Breckenridge would go on to score another 25 unanswered points.

“In the first half, we did not play very well,” Hinson said. “We knew we didn’t. We went in at halftime and rallied around each other and told each other ‘We need to do what we need to do and get our job done play-by-play. Let’s get this offense rolling.’”

Hinson’s words seemed to ring true as the Buckaroos’ offense finally got rolling in the second half. Sophomore quarterback Owen Woodward, who completed 8 of 19 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore receiver Kyler Knight, who had 32 receiving yards on two catches, teamed for the Bucks’ first touchdown after Woodward found Knight across the middle for an over-the-shoulder catch from 10 yards out.

“I really didn’t see the ball until the ref got out of the way and then I caught it,” Knight said. “I saw the end zone and that’s all I saw. They were in man defense so we just had to beat them one-on-one.”

The Buckaroos kept their momentum minutes later after junior running back/receiver Angel Ruiz capped off a drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. Senior Riley Durham put two more points on the board after picking up a loose ball on a muffled snap and catching an end zone pylon in the scramble. 

In the fourth quarter, following an Escobedo field goal, Knight found pay-dirt again after recovering a fumble stripped by Harding. With the game already out of reach and late in the fourth quarter, Bowie coach Dylan Stark opted to throw in his backups and Breckenridge coach Casey Hubble followed.

“The defense did a great job,” Hubble said. “[Bowie] likes to run a lot of trick plays. They have in the past. They got us on them the past two years, but our kids did a pretty good job. They nearly got one on us, but we got a sack on the guy.”

With the win, the Buckaroos are tied for first place in the 3A District 4 standings with perennial powerhouse and 3A state favorite Brock. Breckenridge will head on the road to face the Boyd Yellowjackets, who remain winless in district play with losses to Ponder (26-20) and Bowie (34-20). On offense, the Yellowjackets run from a shotgun-spread, favoring a split-back run-option approach, but are not afraid of testing defensive backs with the strong arm of junior quarterback Kody Risenhoover. 

On defense, they typically run a four-man front, but seemed to favor a 4-4 formation while facing Ponder’s run-based, pro-style offense.

“We want to start rolling and hopefully we can gather some momentum and roll into next week,” Hubble said. “… We just need to clean up the mistakes, false starts and holding penalties, and do it better. That is the key, pick up the pass protection and eliminate penalties. Defensively, we just need to get to where we don’t make mistakes. When you make teams be perfect, they can’t do it.”
