Bucks roll past Boyd 49-14 (full story)

Sat, 10/28/2017 - 2:57 am

BOYD— The Breckenridge Buckaroos made their journey to a potential high school state championship a little easier after securing at least a share of second place in the 3A District 4 standings, following a 49-14 victory over Boyd Friday night.

The Buckaroos cruised to a 49-14 win by taking advantage of their field position, thanks to some timely turnovers by the defense, and quickly put the game out of reach after going into halftime up 27-0.

“We came in knowing we had to dominate and you can’t let up,” said sophomore quarterback Owen Woodward, who threw for four touchdowns Friday night. “No matter what their record is, no matter what our record is, we just have to dominate whoever we’re playing.”

A defensive stand capped off with a sack by junior defensive end Rance Russell- the first of the Buckaroos’ three sacks of the game- kicked off the Bucks’ first offensive series. Woodward found sophomore tight end Jacob Escalon on a dump pass, which Escalon turned into an 18-yard touchdown after breaking three tackles on his way to the end zone. Another defensive highlight, this time on an interception by senior Lonnie Hinson, led to another Buckaroo touchdown after senior running back Zach Willis punched it in from the 2-yard line.

“We just tried to put pressure on the quarterback,” Russell said. “We still have a lot of things to work on, gap integrity - staying in our gaps and not looking in the backfield, but we’re getting better.”

The defense kept Boyd scoreless until late in the fourth quarter, when Breckenridge coach Casey Hubble had already pulled his starters. The offense continued building momentum as Woodward found Hinson on a 13-yard route. Hinson’s one-man highlight reel night ended, after he scampered 46-yards to the end zone off a short pass by Woodward, giving him 103 yards receiving on six catches and giving the Buckaroos a 26-0 lead going into halftime. He ended the night with more than 250 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, including a team-leading 135 yards rushing.

“We knew what we could hit them with,” Hinson said. “The different coverages they had been running, we’d been running over it and we just came out here and executed our game plan. On defense, the previous team we played - Bowie - ran the same offense. We just played based defense and do what we were taught.

“A lot of people counted us out when we were 0-5. Now, in district, we’re 3-0 and ready to get in the playoffs and make a run.”

Escalon stepped out of the game in the second quarter with an injury, giving way to senior tight end Riley Durham. A little more than a minute into the third quarter, Woodward found him on a wheel route with a 20-yard pass, which Durham converted into a 55-yard touchdown. A successful 2-point conversion by senior Chuckie Perez gave Breckenridge a 35-point lead, then a 40-yard rushing touchdown by Willis, and a 35-yard receiving touchdown by sophomore Arryn Medina gave the Bucks an insurmountable 49-0 lead.

“We just executed the offense,” Coach Hubble said. “[Woodward] made the right reads and threw the ball where it needed to be. The kids caught the football tonight. We were able to run the ball enough to keep them honest and throw the ball deep enough to keep the safeties off and that opened everything up.”

Now firmly locked in a battle for a 3A District 4 title, the Buckaroos will look to set up a potential district championship showdown against Brock during the Nov. 13 regular season finale. Before they turn their attention to Brock, they must first best the Ponder Lions Friday.

The Lions come into the game 1-2 in district play, 3-5 overall, and still reeling from a 35-20 loss to Paradise last Friday. Ponder opened district play 56-13, pounding by Brock and picked up its only district win after overcoming an 8-point Boyd deficit, taking the game 26-20.

On offense, the Lions typically run from a wishbone formation, utilizing 5-8 junior running back Carlos Zepeda’s quickness, but will drop back into a shotgun spread when forced into a third-and-long situation. The Buckaroos’ strong-run defense may play to their advantage, but the Lions have a few well-honed trick plays. On defense, the Lions typically run from a three-man front, using their blitzing middle linebackers to limit opposing offenses’ ability to break a play outside the hash marks.

Kickoff time is set for 7:30 p.m.
