JV Bucks wrap the season against Brock

Although the varsity Breckenridge High School football team recently cracked the top 10 list of the Texas Association of Coaches poll, the junior varsity has been on point all season.

The junior varsity Buckaroos will wrap up their season Thursday on the road versus Brock, hoping to end their season with an 8-2 record before they begin joining their varsity peers in practice during the post season.

“We’ve been on a roll right now at the JV level,” Breckenridge offensive assistant Colby Hartfield said. “We’ve won six in a row and we’re putting up a lot of points.”

The JV Bucks travel to Brock with a full head of steam following a 53-6 victory over Ponder last Thursday. Despite promoting two players to the varsity squad this season, Hartfield said players continue stepping up and taking rolls they may not be accustomed.

“Brady Campbell has been really good,” Hartfield said. “He’s a junior that has grown up a lot this season and stepped up to make a bunch of big plays. Jonas, he’s a freshman, he plays quarterback and he is a very talented kid that has grown up a lot. Defensively, our defensive line - Jake Smith and Zach Hernandez - have done a great job. They have grown as a whole over the year.”

Hartfield said it’s exciting to see junior varsity players such as sophomore receiver Arryn Medina move up and become playmakers at the varsity level, and looks forward to seeing how the junior varsity contributes in the postseason and in 2018-2019.

“We really haven’t missed a beat,” Hartfield said. “That’s what you worry about when you a couple of players at the JV level. Usually, you suffer, but we keep getting better and better and the people behind them really stepped up.”

With just one game left in the season, Hartfield believes his players have bought into the system that focus on improving now in order to have a strong foundation for the future.

“We’re just trying to go out and do what we do a lot better than we did last week against Ponder,” Harftield said That’s the message we’ve been selling to them and they’ve bought into it.”
