City favors BEDC aid to BISD program

City Commissioners approved a resolution to allow the Breckenridge Economic Development Corporation to spend money on a program to help make Breckenridge ISD students more successful.

A commissioners Tuesday, July 3, BEDC Director Virgil Moore asked for approval of an expenditure of $27,500 for “Communities in Schools of the Big Country Project.” The City Commission must approve BEDC spending of more than $10,000.

Moore explained the program will help at-risk students by partially funding a program provided by CIS to the Breckenridge ISD, which will provide a school-based student success coach to strategically align and deliver integrated student support designed to help high school students improve school performance in the areas of attendance, academics and behavior. The goal is to help more students graduate who will either learn a trade or join the local workforce with the skillset and work ethic that will make a difference for their employment. Commissioners Russell Blue, Rob Durham, Tom Cyprian and Mayor Bob Sims unanimously approved the first reading of the resolution to spend the money.
