Buckaroos overcome Comanche with late-game heroics

Mon, 09/10/2018 - 3:48 pm
The Breckenridge Buckaroos outlasted the Comanche Indians Friday night in a low-scoring 14-7 game thanks to a stout defense and a late score.

Resurgence was the key to the Buckaroos Friday night’s victory over the Comanche Indians.

The Breckenridge Buckaroos were able to right the ship and score 14 unanswered in the second half to win the ball game 14-7. This was all thanks to some late game heroics by quarterback Kevin Franco (5), who completed a deep pass to Aaryn Medina (6) late in the fourth quarter to go up by a touchdown, as well as stout defense throughout the night.

It was a rough road getting there though. The Bucks combined for a total of four fumbles in the game, which resulted in two lost. One of those was on a muffed punt by the Bucks in the fourth that was recovered by the Indians.

The defensive side of the ball was stout the entirety of the game, giving up one score on a 74-yard run in the second quarter. Other than that, play, the Bucks held the Indians scoreless and gave them trouble picking up first downs consistently. They forced no turnovers but did make the Indians fumble once. Perhaps the most indicative defensive statistic of the night was the nine tackles for a loss, four of which were by Marvin Phillips Jr.

The offensive side of the ball struggled in all phases in the first half. In the second half, however, the passing game seemed to open up for Franco, who completed 10 for 18 on the night after being below 50 percent completion in the first half.

When talking about the key to getting back on track after a sluggish start, Head Coach Casey Hubble said it was important to stay focused and not think about winning, but just doing your job.

“It’s always about the little things,” Hubble said. “Those were kind of our two words for the week …. you can’t focus on winning, you can’t focus on scoring. You just have to focus on what your job is.”

The Bucks will play the Cisco Loboes next Friday, Sept. 14 at home.
