Albert “Al” Burton, age 87 of Albany, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Tom Chandler officiating. Interment followed in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation was held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11 at Morehart Mortuary of Albany. Albert Dee Burton was born June 28, 1936 in Albany, Texas to Albert Pete “Pinky” Burton and Rosa Leta Alexander Burton. He grew up in Albany and graduated from Albany High School in 1955. While in high school, Al was known for his speed. He held the record for most yards rushed in a Class 2A playoff game in 1954 for the Lions with 265 yards against Paducah in the semifinal playoffs. This record would stand for numerous decades until being broken by a Stanton Buffalo running back. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force. Mr. Burton was stationed in Vietnam, England, California and Germany. He married Nita Harrison Wiloth on March 11, 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty Burton; his sister, Margaret Ann Burton.

Mr. Burton is survived by his wife, Nita Burton of Albany; her children, Mike Wiloth and wife Becky of Albany, Beverley Salters and husband, Buford of Albany, Kim Wiloth and wife, Trumi of Albany, Mindy Skelton and husband Bob of Albany, Tempie Wiloth of Albany, Tammy Brown and husband Tommie of Albany; one sister, Saundra Thurman of Breckenridge; 10 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren.
