David Vern ‘Butch’ Spencer

David Vern “Butch” Spencer, 80, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 22 at 11 a.m. at Morehart Mortuary Chapel.

David Vern “Butch” Spencer was born Feb. 22, 1938 in Breckenridge to John Walter and Theodotia Hood Spencer. He was born in the front bedroom of the family home at 911 E. Hullum. When he was born, his brother John suggested he be named “Butch” after a character from a comic strip and it stuck with him the rest of his life. 

He married Glenda Sue Abraham on April 21, 1956. He also served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at San Pedro, California. Butch was employed by Petco before purchasing Spencer Paint Company from his father. He and Sue worked in the paint store many years before opening EZ Pawn and Gun Shop in the late ‘80s. In his retirement years he enjoyed raising buffalo and zebras. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Gwyndolyn Spencer, Marie Lumas and Cellastine Johnson.

 He is survived by his wife, Sue; sons, Johnny Glenn Spencer and wife D’Ann of Breckenridge, Mark Evan Spencer of Iowa Park, and Ronnie Michael Spencer of Weatherford; grandchildren, Jason Spencer, Kayla Ellis and husband Ronnie, Jacob Spencer, Seth Spencer, Shelby Hettinger, Kevin Dobbs, and Emily Herring and husband Josh; great-grandchildren, Clayton, Claire, Callen David and Callie Spencer, Jaysyn Dobbs, and Clark Herring; two brothers, John Spencer and wife Betty of Corsicana, and Jim Spencer and wife Lougenia of Rainbow; several nieces and nephews and many longtime family friends.
