Jesse Ramos Cortez of Throckmorton passed away Sunday, March 26. Age 81, Jesse was a business owner and beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born June 13, 1941, in Lexington, to Julian and Jesusa (Ramos) Cortez, Jesse was raised throughout central Texas before settling in Throckmorton with his wife of 67 years, Amelia (Reyna) Cortez, who he married Nov. 25, 1955.

A self-made man, Jesse worked in many industries including heavy equipment and auto mechanics, oil and gas, and agriculture before partnering with his son to co-found and operate Throckmorton Tire Service.

Jesse is preceded in death by his four sons, Joe Cortez, Jesse Cortez, Jr., Ray Cortez, and Charles Cortez; and his sisters, Helen Silva and Mary Santamaria.

Jesse’s greatest legacy is his family and he is survived by his wife, Amelia Cortez; daughter, Susan Looney (Gary) of Wichita Falls; daughters-in-law, Sally Cortez of Stephenville and Angela Cortez of Breckenridge; nine grandchildren, Peggy Campos (Mauricio) of Midlothian, Daniel Cortez (Stephanie) of La Vernia, Kristen Cortez of Stephenville, Justin Looney (Emily) of Iowa Park, Jessica Cortez (Shawna) of Amarillo, Brittany Rosenberger (Andrew) of Newton Falls, Ohio, Jacob Cortez of Breckenridge, Ray Cortez (Heather) of Abilene and Corbin Cortez of Breckenridge; sixteen great-grandchildren, Madison Vargas, Vanessa Vargas, Joe Cortez II, Lake Cortez, Aaliyah Cortez, Jaxon Looney, Valerie Looney, Katie Looney, Clara Looney, Peyson Cortez, Braxtyn Cortez, Kaylee Rosenberger, Lacey Rosenberger, Kyran Rosenberger, Hunter Cortez, Selena Cortez and one on the way; his sisters, Frances Cortez of Seymour and Gloria Cortez (Amado) of Lometa; and his brothers, John Cortez (Lorrie) of Breckenridge and Joe Cortez (Carolyn) of Rockdale; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A visitation took place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, with the Rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Morehart Mortuary in Breckenridge. The graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5 at Throckmorton Cemetery with Father Dias of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and may be left at Morehart Mortuary.
