Ray “Poppy”Meadows

June 6, 1946 – Sept. 4, 2022

Ray Meadows, known as Poppy to most, age 76 of Breckenridge, passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Morehart Mortuary, with Dannie Lee officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Moon Cemetery, under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation was held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Morehart Mortuary.

Poppy was born June 6, 1946 in Decatur. He grew up in Breckenridge and graduated with the Class of 1964. In high school he was involved in FFA as the president and beau. He worked on the railroad in Oklahoma and that’s where he met his future wife. He was drafted and spent two years in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he went to work for Veale Land and Cattle Co. in 1970 and worked there until 1998. Ray then went to work for the Muleshoe Ranch until 2001. Ray then worked for Stephens County until 2009. He went to work for the MT7 Ranch until his health wouldn’t allow it.

Poppy was always known to be his grandkids biggest fan at any stock show wherever they were showing. He was known as a prankster. He would consistently hide and scare his family and always had a smile on his face. He always said that if he knew how great grandkids were, he would have had them first. He was a member of Stephens County Sheriffs Posse until the disbanded. He was a member of the Jr. Rodeo Board and Jr. Livestock Show Board. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lee Ola Meadows; his brother, Cecil Franklin; and his sister, Jean.

Ray is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kay Meadows; his daughter, Paula and husband Cody; his son, Ward and wife Kirby; his grandson, Tanner Garland and his granddaughter, Sydney Garland; and brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Lisa Diamond.
