Historically Speaking

The 1954 Breckenridge Buckaroos continued to sweep through District 3A-1, with clear cut wins except for the 13-13 tie against Levelland, as the only mar on their record.

On Nov. 12, 1954, the Bucks were slated to play the Snyder Tigers before an estimated crowd of 4,700.

Neither team scored in the first quarter and the Snyder Tigers were the first to draw blood in the second quarter. Then the Bucks went into high gear against the Tiger defenders and got a touchdown of their own. Dick Carpenter (FB) broke through and raced 77 yards with a Tiger defender close on his tail. It was part of a 88-yard march by the Bucks capped off by a touchdown, with Clyde Harris (RHB) adding the extra point.

The second touchdown came when the Bucks marched down field in eight plays, with Carpenter going 20 yards, Bennett Watts (QB) going another 22 yards and Carpenter pounding out the final 15 yards, which amounted to a 67-yard drive for a TD and an extra point conversion added by Harris.

The third BucksTD came from a pitchout from Watts to Jake Sandefer (LHB), who went the final 16 yards for the TD.

A few minutes later, Harris returned the Tiger kickoff and went 24 yards to the Bucks 390-yardline. Then Sandefer galloped the remaining 61 yards on the last play of the half, with the help of Jerry Cramer (LT), and then turned on the steam to the goal line and the fourth Bucks TD. The score was now 28-7, at the half.

The Bucks weren’t finished scoring at that point. In the third quarter, the Bucks went 67 yards for the fifth TD when Watts kept the ball and went the final two yards for the touchdown. The march included a 20-yard run by Watts and a 25-yard pass from Sandefer to Harris and the final two yards by Watts.

The Tigers also made a touchdown in the third quarter but no extra point conversion, which made the score 35-13 at the end of the quarter. Harris had a record five for five extra point kicks in this game before the subs were sent in near the end beginning of the fourth quarter. The final Bucks touchdown came when Buddy Hamilton (LHB) intercepted a Tiger pass and returned it to the Tiger 22-yard-line.

Seven plays later, Harris went over from the five-yard-line. Watts had tallied 20 yards of the final 32, in three plays. John Cotten made the final conversion point and the final score was 42-13.

Meanwhile, the East Ward Yellowjackets, coached by Ox Emmons, had won the Ward School Championship by beating both North and South Ward.

Among the team members were future Buckaroo players: Tommy Ford, John Cook, Jim Bob Coody, Buddy Langford, David Clark, Sammy Fambro, Billy Corbett and Otho Noggle.

By Sunday, Nov. 21, 1954, the TIL had tentatively re-assigned the Breckenridge Buckaroos to District 2A-9, which included Stephenville, Cisco, DeLeon, Dublin, Graham, Mineral Wells and now Breckenridge.

However, the Bucks hoped they could still be voted into District 3A-3, where the Buckaroos had applied for consideration.

Next week, the Bucks were slated to play the Sweetwater Mustangs, in Sweetwater. A bus was chartered to take fans to the game. Jerry Cramer (LT) was suffering from acute lime burns from the Snyder game along with several others but his were the most severe and was questionable to play in the Sweetwater game.
