There’s a word for that

I could not believe my ears when Nancy Pelosi said building the wall was considered immoral.

Honestly? Is she serious? Maybe, just maybe, I am missing something here.

According to Webster’s Dictionary - Immoral: not conforming to accepted standards of morality. Immorality is the violation of moral laws, norms or standards. Immorality is normally applied to people or actions, or in a broader sense, it can be applied to groups or corporate bodies and works of art.

To elaborate, when someone is immoral, they make decisions that purposely violate a moral agreement. This is referring to conduct and it applies to one who acts contrary to or does not obey or conform to standards or morality. So Nancy believes building the wall is contrary to the standards of morality.

Apart whether I believe we should or should not, why does anyone consider building the wall?

• According to the Department of Homeland Security there were 12 million immigrants living in the country illegally as of January 2015.

• There have been many accounts of those who are gang members who have entered this country illegally and have murdered and or raped American citizens. According to a Cato at Liberty blog, “The Murder of Mollie Tibbetts and Illegal Immigrant Crime: The Facts” written by Alex Nowrasteh, illegal immigrants are less likely to be incarcerated for crimes in the United States than native-born Americans.

• What about human trafficking? The U.S. Justice Department estimates that 35,500–170,500 people are trafficked into the country every year. The 2016 Global Slavery Index estimates that, including U.S. citizens and immigrants, 57,700 people are victims of human trafficking. Those being trafficked include young children, teenagers, men and women and can be domestic citizens or foreign nationals.

• The Washington Examiner did an article in 2016 stating “over 99 percent of all marijuana and methamphetamine seized at U.S. borders has come from Mexico, a colossal cache of 8.2 million pounds since 2012 and a demonstration of the efforts by drug cartels to feed America’s habit, one that is leading to increasing deaths, according to a new report.”

America has a standard or morality. While the average American classifies the above list as evil behavior, Nancy believes the wall is immoral. I suppose anyone who built a wall or gate surrounding their own property can be classified as immoral, unless Nancy is confused with amoral, which describes someone who has no morals and doesn’t know what right or wrong means. Both immoral and amoral have to do with right and wrong, but amoral means having no sense of either, like a snail. Immoral describes someone who knows the difference.

Sorry Nancy, you may be confused about the definition of immoral and are acting amoral. Those who cross into this country know they are breaking the law by entering illegally. Perhaps we should consider jails and cells are also immoral since they do exactly what the suggested wall will do, keep out immoral behavior from causing harm to those who are moral.
