Abbott issues disaster declaration, seeks fed help

Gov. Greg Abbot has issued a disaster declaration for Texas counties affected by the early February ice storm and is seeking a federal declaration as well for areas in Southeast Texas affected by rare January tornadoes. The ice storm caused considerable damage to property and power outages in the affected areas. The declaration for ice-storm damaged counties includes Denton, Hays, Henderson, Milam, Smith, Travis and Williamson counties.

Woodson News: Six more weeks!

My Christmas tree is down! But, maybe I should have left it where it was, as Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means there could be six more weeks of winter. I don’t think anyone knows for sure; the weather forecasters certainly do not. We need rain! How about that week off school with ice and snow and sleet and rain? I lost four days with my students.

Making up for lost time with the grandkids

For a while there, my life was so committed to caring for a partner who was very ill, my own health problems, and work that I didn’t get to see my children and grandchildren like I’d wanted. It was frustrating. I FaceTimed and texted their mothers and even tried to talk to them. Mostly they were on their way out to other “fun” things or were too busy to visit. As their grandmother, I wondered how on earth they would flourish into their greatness without my advice, my oversite, and my help.

A man who found his way...

He didn’t see it as a turning point at the time--this budding vocal artist who was belting out country songs at the Burger Box in Arlington. Craig Murphy, then age 40, might have been flipping burgers instead, trying to find a road that led somewhere instead of deadend trails he’d followed for a couple of decades.

Cognitive assessments are for the brave

The last time I was in, I was telling him about forgetting names, having a hard time coming up with words I want to use, and being dizzy when I stand up. I thought he was going to tell me to stand up slower, call everyone “Honey,” and quit talking so much. I enjoy our little visits, and usually he assures me that nothing is wrong. Well, he didn’t exactly say that. He said he wanted to do some tests.

Wow! What a whirlwind! It was 2022, then, it was Christmas 2022, then it was New Year’s, and we welcomed 2023, then back to school and now, Stock Show Season has begun! County show has come and gone and the sale was wonderful for all the kids. Now, here we are at the Ft.

What if the bank had no cash?

In Denmark last year, there were no bank robberies… none… zero. I know Denmark is not a large country, but it is true. The thing is that only twenty banks in that country kept cash on hand last year. Therefore, when someone wanted to rob a bank, he would have to bring a deposit slip with his routing number and account number and ask the teller to make a deposit into his account, while he held a gun on them. If it is a country where guns aren’t common, maybe he would have to bring along his camera and threaten to take their picture and post it on Tinder or Match… making some remark about their personal character… For a time, robbing ATM machines was common. Some were chained to the back of a truck and actually hauled off… or at least out into the street where the chain broke. Some ATM thieves sat around waiting for an unsuspecting person to make a withdrawal, then they forced them to withdraw all their funds. At three hundred dollars maximum cash withdrawal… I’m not sure it is worth the effort.
