Woodson News: Making memories

Happy Homecoming Week to all of Throckmorton! Woodson homecoming week will be Oct. 10-15. Remember to turn in your Escort songs for Coronation by Monday, Oct. 3. Coronation practice is at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 on the football field. It’s the only practice so be there! The school board met Monday. They honored Mr. and Mrs, WHS: Gevin Beauchamp and Savanna Sullivan. Congratulations to both of them! The JH Volleyball girls played well against Albany and high school faced Moran on Tuesday.

My quiet place sparkles in the sunset...

Because I have closed my office and now use it as a guestroom, I’ve moved my desk, printer, and stuff into a corner of my bedroom. These items take up a little more room than expected, but I’m not back there much. I’ve given up on the “great American novel… written by a woman over seventy.” So, I’m only back there to pay bills, send emails, check my Facebook page, and write this column. It’s different.

The road taken...

I, as well as most others who string words together, will never be confused with Robert Frost, the poetry genius from whose pen flowed marvelous words about his beloved New England. One of his best-published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1915--was “The Road Not Taken.” Actually, it was intended as a joke to a writer friend.

Proud to be a Texan...

I have always been proud of being a Texan. Most of us who were born in Texas feel that way. Of course, there have been a few scoundrels who brought some shame on the name, but that only seems to enhance the mystique. Like having a member of the family who robbed banks with Bonnie and Clyde or was arrested for some noble act of civil disobedience. The weight of the shame lessens if three generations have past, or you’ve crossed three rivers. Being a Texan makes up for it.

Grandparents

Belated Happy Grandparents Day to all of you who may fit the title! What does it mean to be a grandparent? Well, first of all it means that you probably did a great job raising your own children because they survived long enough to have their own children to share with you. Way to go! Congratulations!

Poll: Most Texas teachers have considered quitting

More than threefourths of Texas teachers say they have seriously considered quitting the profession largely because of a perceived lack of respect and support, according to a new survey by the Charles Butt Foundation. Excessive workload and inadequate pay were other major reasons that teachers are considering leaving, The Dallas Morning News and other media outlets reported. The percentage of teachers considering quitting has risen to 77% this year from 58% in 2020, when the foundation conducted the first survey on the subject.
