The Breckenridge High School athletics program has suspended football activity through Friday, October 30. The BISD team has canceled the Thursday, October 29, junior varsity, and the Friday, October 30 varsity football games against the Jim Ned Indians.

The decision coincides with the cancellation of the junior varsity contest that was set for Thursday, October 22, and the varsity football game that was set for Friday, October 23 against the Wall Hawks.

Casey Pearce, Breckenridge ISD Athletic Director, released a statement on Monday, October 19 detailing the reason for the decision.

“After lengthy communication and exploration of a developing situation, it is in the best interest of this athletic department that we suspend high school boys football competition and training activities for several days,” Pearce said. “This comes following several weeks of monitoring an increase in COVID-19 positive cases in Stephens County and the surrounding area, as well as adhering to the guidelines set forth by the State of Texas. These positives have come to affect the football program to a point in which both the JV & Varsity teams have lost multiple athletes and coaches to contact tracing, COVID like symp toms, and COVID Positive exposure.”

As of Friday, October 23, Stephens County has confirmed 55 cases of the COVID-19 virus and has caused the cancellation of two district contests for the Buckaroos.

“At this time as the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, it is in the best interest of the program to make this decision to suspend football activities at the high school level until this spike of symptoms and positive contacts subside,” Pearce said. “This decision is a punch to the gut and not easy to make. My competitive side and pride can’t be the reason not to make an aggressive decision like this to err on the side of our athletes.”

The team is set to finish the season traveling to play the Texas Leadership Charter Academy in San Angelo.

“We plan to resume full activity on Monday, November 2 following a twoweek hiatus,” Pearce said. “Preparation for our last ballgame of the season will begin at that time.”

The San Angelo Texas Leadership Charter Academy Eagles have a 0-7 record. Losing to the Brady Bulldogs, 81- 8, Junction Eagles, 40-19, Grape Creek Eagles, 42-12, Reagan County Owls, 61-0, Stanton Buffaloes, 68-0, Wall Hawks, 72-0 and have also had a game canceled due to the COVID-19 virus. The Eagles hosted the district leading, Jim Ned Indians, on Friday, October 23, and lost 75-0.
