BISD to survey students on adding soccer to Athletics program

Wed, 12/23/2020 - 5:00 am

The Breckenridge Independent School District discussed the possibility of adding boys and girls soccer to the Athletic Program. The discussion occurred during the Monday, December 14, school board meeting.

Once students return from the holiday break, the BISD Athletics program will begin to survey student/athletics on the possibility of students playing the sport. The survey will pique the interest of sixth through twelfth graders on the curiosity for the sport.

“We want multi-sport playing kids,” Casey Pearce, Breckenridge ISD Athletics Director, said. “The easiest cross over will be for the students in track. The question is will we have a collection of players who will be successful?”

BISD will need to have the number of students to play district games and are interested in student feedback regarding the addition.

“I want parents to understand that there must be a commitment to playing the sport. “Paul Lippe, School Board member for Place Two, said.

“I can see positives and negatives, and it’s something we shouldn’t make with a snap decision. We also need to look at the overall budget of adding a program.”

BISD will inspect the possibility and the travel, the district would make in adding the program.

“We’re looking at a 25-26 game schedule,” Pearce said. “We would probably go to Abilene, Wylie, Sweetwater, or back east or to Witchita.” “Those are the directions to travel for non-district soccer. If we go into a five-team district, an example would be Mineral Wells, Weatherford, Brownwood, Stephensville. We’ll play eight games in district competition, home and away. If they reinstate tournaments, we’ll play six games in tournament play.”

The Buckaroos will also weigh the options of playoffs for the soccer program.

“It’s the top four teams making the playoffs,” Pearce said. “The one seed would play the fourth seed, and the second seed would play the third at a neutral site.”

BISD will survey students for the possibility of adding the soccer program to the athletic program.

“I think we should come in after the break and try to survey in the first two weeks of school,” Pearce said. “We’ll have something to show for the January, 11 school board meeting.”

The BISD school board will hold a special meeting on Monday, December 28. The first school board meeting of the new year is set for Monday, January 11.
