If you haven’t been to a Bucks or Lady Bucks basketball game this season, your missing out on some really good basketball and some real battles for a win. The Lady Bucks demonstrated their fighting spirit Friday, Dec. 21, in their last district game for 2018. The Lady Bucks had recently lost a very close game by one point, the Peaster Lady Greyhounds won by a score of 51-52, on Dec. 14.
Just before that loss, the Lady Bucks had lost to the Jacksboro Lady Tigers 54-64 on Dec.11, in a game they had fought back from a 19 point deficit to within 10 points at the finish.
The Lady Bucks were more determined than ever to face the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets and come out with a victory. Initially, the Lady Bucks were in a shooting slump with rim outs when they were sure the ball was going in but popped out at the last second. At the end of the first period, the Lady Bucks were behind 8-14, the largest deficit of the game to that point. In the second quarter, the Lady Bucks began to turn it around with some balls hitting their targets and they gradually began to creep up with the score 15-18 and 17-20, with some good defense at the other end to keep the Lady Jackets from scoring more. However, by the end of the second quarter, the Lady Bucks had fallen behind by eight points at 20-28 and a spirt by the Jackets.
The Lady Bucks continued their temporarily downward spiral at the beginning of the third quarter when the Lady Bucks fell to a 10 point deficit, 24-34, at 4:11 of the quarter. Then a spark hit and the Lady Bucks began to gradually creep up, with a three-pointer from Madison Stanley (10) and defensively, the Lady Bucks kept the Lady Jackets from scoring for two whole minutes, stuck at 36 points. By the end of the third quarter, the score was at 34-39 and then 36-39 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Kyleigh Willis (22) made her own three-pointer and a two-pointer from Aaliyah Lawson (24) added to that to make it 41-41, all tied up at 3:53 in the fourth quarter. Stanley contributed another three-pointer to make it 45-43 and the lead. Then there were two timely foul shots made by Carly Tennison (15) that took the score to 47-43, the biggest lead of the night for the Lady Bucks. The Lady Jackets were stalled at 43 points for over a minute while the Bucks made their timely foul shots. At 57 seconds, the score was tied once more at 47-47. At that point, Tennison registered two more points and a foul shot to take the lead in the closing seconds, 50-47. The calm play and ball handling of Alyssa Reyes helped the Lady Bucks in that tenuous last few minutes that was well-played and a well-deserved victory for the Lady Bucks. Madison Stanley led the Lady Bucks with 23 points. The gals now have a 11-10 record overall and a 2-2 record in district play. The Lady Bucks played the Early Lady Longhorns in a non-district game at 1:15 p.m. Friday Dec. 28 and will resume district play Friday, Jan. 4, at Millsap to play the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Bucks varsity will be back home at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Breckenridge Athletic and Fine Arts Facility against the Paradise Lady Panthers. JV will play at 5 p.m. followed by the Lady Bucks Varsity. Meanwhile, the Bucks freshman team played a tough ball game at home and lost in the last few seconds 26-28 to the Boyd Yellowjackets. The JV Bucks team played the Boyd Yellowjackets and also lost a close one by 39-41, after being ahead 39-38, with 24 seconds to go. Instead of taking care of the ball like the coach instructed the players to do in the final huddle, one of the Bucks players took the ball down the floor and subsequently lost it, which allowed the Jackets to put in the winning basket.
The varsity Bucks won their game against the Boyd Yellowjackets 69-57 and that makes their overall record 9-7 and the Bucks are 1-1 in district, with a loss to the Tolar Rattlers 47-60 on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
The Bucks Varsity played the Holiday Eagles in the first round of the Eula Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament at noon Thursday, Dec. 27. They lost that game by a sizable margin due partially to the missing players that included Jonas Arellano and Owen Woodward. Kevin Franco had 10 points and Kyle Canada had eight points. We will have more about those results next edition.
