The Buckaroos started fast, finished strong and defeated the Boyd Yellowjackets 48-38 last Friday at home.

From the opening tip, the Buckaroos were in firm control of this contest. They jumped out to a 14-4 lead to end the first quarter. The lead was due to the quick start from Aaryn Medina, Kyle Canada and Gerardo Palacios.

“Kyle Canada was huge for us tonight,” Breckenridge basketball coach, Colby Hartfield, said. “He made some outside shots, took a few charges and made a layup late in the game so he was huge tonight. When he plays well we’re really hard to beat.”

The second quarter saw more stellar play from the Bucks after Owen Woodward grabbed an offensive rebound and put the score back in.

The Yellowjackets were able to cut into the lead before halftime, with the help from a 3-pointer from Coda Tolan. However, the Bucks were able to keep their lead at the half, 23-16.

The Bucks came out of halftime still shooting a high percentage from the field and extended their lead in the third, 35-29.

Up six points with just over five minutes to play, Woodward stole a pass and raced down to the basket. He missed the layup and was fouled. He made up the missed shot by sinking both freethrows.
Woodward made another couple of plays, including a layup and rebound on consecutive possessions, which put the game out of reach for the Yellowjackets.

“It was a tough district win,” said Coach Hartfield. “We were awesome inside the three point line all night and I am proud we were able to get some defensive stops and play well in transition.

The Bucks will battle against the Paradise Panthers at 7:30 p.m. next Friday, Feb. 7 at home.
