Bucks’ baseball season ends at Bi-District

Wed, 05/19/2021 - 5:00 am

It is always difficult when all the competition ends abruptly and all of a sudden there are no more practices to prepare for the next game. This is especially true when everyone had aspirations of going further in the competition until someone throws a curveball and ends that aspiration.

The Breckenridge High School Varsity Baseball Team was stopped by the Early Longhorns in the Bi-District matchup.

The first game ended triumphantly at, (15-5) on Escalon Field in the Owen D. Woodward Stadium and home to the BHS Baseball teams. Next, the team had to travel to Early and play the second game in the three-game format. That game ended in a disappointing reversal at, (3-13).

The stage was set for the dramatic conclusion in a third game that same afternoon. The game was tied at (5-5) from the 6th inning, the 7th, the 8th, the 9th and the 10th innings. Then, in the top of the 11th inning, the fourth pitcher was called up from centerfield to finish off the Longhorns. Unfortunately, that was not the case and they collected two runs to make it (5-7). The Bucks had to muster up two runs to tie the game and three runs to win it all. The Bucks had no more warm bats to gather the required hits and collect the required runs. The game ended at (5-7) and the aspirations ended for the Breckenridge Buckaroos baseball team.

When the boys have time to reflect and gather their thoughts, everyone will recognize the young team of several freshmen in starting positions and only three seniors to lead the team effort. The inexperience of key players in key positions broke down with five errors and so did the usual batting power. However, the defensive prowess of the Early Longhorns should be considered as well. In this instance, the home plate umpire, in the third game, from Early, Texas probably should have recused himself from umpiring in this third game of the Bi-District competition.

The freshmen have gained valuable experience this season and will be more prepared as they move forward to sharpen their skills and hone their baseball knowledge. Maturity helps in all sports and everyone can set the new goal for next year and the coaches will pay more attention to the umpire selections throughout the season.

The community of Breckenridge commends the team for representing the community and their school in such a positive manner.
