The Breckenridge Buckaroos varsity basketball team beat the Boyd Yellowjackets 69-63 and will go to the playoffs, where they will face Holliday.

Tied at the end of the first quarter 21-21, the Bucks took control of the game and never lost the lead. Gerardo Palacios (10) was the top scorer for the Bucks on the night with 27 points.

Last week the Bucks also played the Peaster Greyhounds Tuesday, Feb. 12 in their last district game of the season. A win for the Bucks, as well as a loss for Boyd, would have put the Bucks in the playoffs.

They started out strong against the Greyhounds, maintaining the lead through the first five minutes of the first quarter. The Bucks had buckets from Palacios, Kevin Franco

(5) and Owen Woodward (13), who had a three-pointer. Palacios and Franco both added another basket each and by 3:04 of the first quarter, the Bucks led 16-14.

However, the Greyhounds got on a 3-11 run and by the end of the first quarter had leaped ahead to a 19-25 lead, which they never relinquished from that point forward.›Despite three sets of double foul shots and then a three-pointer from Aaryn Medina (23), the Bucks didn’t generate enough fire power to stay with the Greyhounds and by the half, the Greyhounds led 33-47, a 14-point lead.

The 14-point lead was not insurmountable going into the second half for the Bucks, but then the Greyhounds went on a shooting rampage the Bucks couldn’t match with their nine points against the 20 made by Peaster. By the end of the third quarter, the score was 42-69 and now a 27 point lead.

The Bucks only made 10 points in the final quarter and Peaster added 15 more points to make the final score 52-84; 32-point loss for the Bucks.

However, the Bucks story doesn’t end there because the Boyd Yellowjackets also lost their final district game and are tied with the Bucks in District 7-3A with a (6-8) record.

The Bucks and the Boyd Yellowjackets were set to square-off in a seeding playoff game at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Graham, to determine which team will fill the fourth playoff spot representing District› 7-3A.

The Bucks clinched a playoff spot with a win over Boyd and are going to the playoffs, where they played Holliday in a bi-district tilt from District 8-3A on Monday, Feb. 18 in Graham.
