Wed, 11/11/2020 - 5:00 am

With a 14-0 lead midway through the first half, things were looking good for the Breckenridge Buckaroos, but the Texas Leadership Charter Academy Eagles were driving towards the Bucks endzone. With the Eagles in Bucks territory, a strip, fumble, and return for a defensive touchdown by Jonas Arellano put the Buckaroos in firm control of the contest.

The Breckenridge Buckaroos would cruise past the TLCA Eagles on Friday, November 6, with a 42-0 victory. The Buckaroos traveled to San Angelo for a much-anticipated return to the gridiron. The contest featured an attempt to close out the 2020 season on a high note.

“I’m excited these seniors were able to finish with a victory,” Casey Pearce, Buckaroos head coach said. “It was 14 weeks of hard work, and they were able to close it out. It didn’t play out all year as we wanted, but we finished strong. I’m going to go and hug their necks. I’m proud of them and am going to miss them.”

Among being the last game of the season, the Buckaroos seniors were playing in their final game in a Buck’s football jersey.

With 11 seniors playing their final game, emotions ran high for the Buckaroos as the team was dialed in from the start.

The Buckaroo defense had a stellar performance holding the Eagles to zero points, six first downs, negative yards in the ground game, and only 108 passing yards.

Among defensive standouts were:

Jonas Arellano, finishing the night with two sacks, seven tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery for a defensive score.

Logan King, finishing with a sack and three tackles for loss, and Johnny Alamance, intercepted an Eagles pass along with four pass break ups.

The Buckaroos offense was exceptional also, scoring a team-high on the season.

Henry Johnson, Buckaroo quarterback, finished the contest 8-14 98 yards, a rushing touchdown, and a 27-yard touchdown pass to Zeke Castillo.

The Bucks leading rushers were running backs, Anson Rodgers, with six rushes for 38 yards and two touchdowns, and Jerry Lawson, 10 rushes for 56 yards and one touchdown

Although Pearce is proud of the senior class, expectations are still high in Breckenridge.

“We have work to do,” Pearce said. “We need to get stronger and faster. I want us to learn football and increase our football IQ.”

The Buckaroos football team will move on to the 2021 season as expectations consistent in Breckenridge.
