Bucks drop district contest against Eagles, 67-50

Wed, 01/27/2021 - 5:00 am

The Breckenridge Buckaroos were defeated by the Holliday Eagles, 67-50, on Friday, January 22 following a passionate district battle on home court.

The Eagles used a 22-12 run in the second quarter and the full-court press to hurry the Bucks into a few turnovers in the contest.

“We were up by eight in the second quarter before we let the press(full-court press) get to us,” Brent Lucas, Buckaroos head basketball coach, said. “ It’s just the little nuances of the game, and when we go up against a senior-led ball club, it’s different. That’s not making excuses, but the reality. I thought we did very well in the second half against the press, and we turned it over a few times, but overall, we keep our composure in the second quarter after that 22-12 run.”

The Bucks started the contest with a tip-in by Jonas Arellano for the first points of the game. With the Bucks down, 5-4, after two free throws from the Eagles, Arellano backed his way in for another score.

After a three-pointer, the Bucks would take a 9-7 lead late in the first quarter. A layup tied the contest, and the Eagles and Bucks were tied near the end of the first quarter.

Jerry Lawson got in on the scoring as the two teams traded baskets in the early going. With the clock ticking near the end of the first quarter, a buzzer-beating threepoint gave the Bucks a 14-13 lead.

With Bucks down one, a foul and free throws made by Jonathan Trejo would put the Bucks ahead, 17-15, midway through the second quarter. Another three-pointer by Arellano gave the Bucks a 20-15 lead.

Utilizing a full-court press, the Eagle were successful in getting the Bucks to use multiple timeouts in the first half. Although the press was successful in the second quarter, the Bucks had open players in the paint to score some baskets.

A spin move by Arellano moved the Bucks lead to eight with just over four minutes to play in the first half.

However, a plethora of turnovers by the Bucks allowed the Eagle back into the contest. The Eagles used turnovers for a 22-12 run to take a twopoint lead with one minute to play in the first half.

An offensive explosion of points by the Eagles gave the team a seven-point lead over the Bucks, and by the end of the first half, the Bucks were trailing 35-26.

With the Bucks down seven to start the second half, one free throw shot by Arellano cut into the Eagles lead, and the Bucks were down six points.

The Bucks, down by 16 as the fourth quarter began, needed to score some points for the comeback. Eventually, the Bucks lost the contest, 67-50, falling to 10-11 on the season and 2-5 in district play.

“We talked about it at halftime, and it is all about confidence,” Lucas said. “I think it’s building, and I’m proud of them. I thought we fought hard.”

The Bucks have a bye Tuesday, January 26, before traveling to Jacksboro on Friday, January 29, to visit the Tigers.
