The Breckenridge Buckaroos dropped to 0-4 on the season after a 35-12 loss to the Holliday Eagles on Friday, September 25. Among the countless bright spot of the game, the Buckaroo’s were able to score the first two touchdowns of the season as the team remains hopeful for the season.

The Buckaroos began the game with an auspicious start after an unsuccessful punt on fourth down by the Eagles. The chance of possession led to the Buckaroo’s first touchdown of the season, as Anson Rodgers plunged into the endzone.

“Saw some glimpses of improvement,” Casey Pearce, Buckaroos head football coach said. “It was nice to see the offense get into the endzone, and I thought we played well in the first half.”

The touchdown would give the Buck’s the 6-0 lead after a failed extra-point attempt. The Eagles offense begin to roll as their triple-option and play-action passes began to formalize.

The Eagles were able to drive down the field and score a touchdown when the Eagle’s quarterback dove for the pylon to score. The team was able to covert the extra point to take a 7-6 lead.

The two teams would trade blows, and by halftime, the Eagles led the Buckaroos 13-6.

“We had an opportunity in the second half, with the opening drive against them to get a stop on third and long, and we let them out,” Pearce said. “As a result, it snowballed, they put points on the board, and we shot ourselves in the foot. A quick score followed, then all of a sudden, was a three-score game.”

The Eagles were able to score 21 points in the third quarter to distance themselves from the Buckaroos and open a three-score led.

The Buckaroos were able to score on an option to running back Jerry Lawson to score the second touchdown of the season.

“We had two consistent weeks of practice,” Pearce said. “I think we are still finding our identity, as leadership is starting to show on the offensive side. Consistency on the defensive side of the ball has not shown yet. We have really good players, we have people in the position to make plays, but we haven’t been consistently making those plays.”

Next up, the Bucks will head into a bye week, then travel to Clyde to face the 1-4 Bulldogs.

“They’ll be sharpening their knives for the ole Buckaroos,” Pearce said. “We better get ready because they’ll put us in space. We need to be able to cover, tackle, and rush the quarterback. We’ll need to be able to answer and put points up and find another gear. We have to be able to mature and keep teaching.”
