The Breckenridge Buckaroos outlasted the Ballinger Bearcats 34-27 in the junior varsity game on Thursday, September 3, inside Buckaroo Stadium.

The JV Buckaroos came away with a win Thursday night against the Ballinger Bearcats as Buck’s freshman, Nick King, scored twice with touchdown runs of seven and 11 yards.

Buckaroo sophomore, Adrian Ruiz, added two touchdowns with runs of 83 and 50 yards. Ruiz finished with nearly 200 yards rushing in the contest.

Camden Escalon finished with a touchdown from ten yards out and two interceptions. On the defensive side, Caiden Marin had a sack of 11 yards and Brilee Bernal came up with a momentum-changing fumble recovery.

Braye Cantrell had a crucial interception towards the end of the game and the game ended on a Jordan Robertson sack while the clock ran to zero.

The game began with the Bearcats winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half.

A first down fumble by Ruiz put the Bucks in second, third, and long. A punt on fourth down gave the Bearcat’s good field position.

On second down, the Buck’s gave up a long run to the Bearcats for a touchdown. The Bearcats went for the two-point conversion and were successful, to make the score 8-0.

The Bearcats kicked an unsuccessful onside kick and another fumble by the Bucks on first downs put the Buck behind in the down and distance.

After a great run by King put the ball deep in Bearcats territory, on the 19-yard line, a fiveyard run by Ruiz bought up a third down. A stop on third down for the Bearcats forced the Bucks to go for a conversion on fourth down. The Bucks scored a clutch touchdown on fourth down after King was unwilling to be tackled short of the goal line. The extra point was missed.

After the Bucks touchdown, the Bearcats drove deep into Bucks territory, but a holding call bought up third and 14. The Bucks would get a sack on third and 14 bringing up fourth and 25. The Bearcats would attempt a conversion on fourth and 25 and would throw into the end zone. A holding call on the Buckaroo defense gave the Bearcats a first down at the Buckaroo’s 15-yard line.

Another third-down stop by the Bucks bought up another fourth down for the Bearcats. This time, a stop by the Bucks gave the team the ball deep in their territory.

Deep in their territory meant nothing to Ruiz, as the sophomore running back received the toss and ran 82 yards. The run gave the Bucks the lead 12-8.

On the following possession, a fumble by the Bearcats gave the Bucks the ball at midfield. The Bucks were unable to turn the possession into points and punted the ball.

The Bearcats were able to get a long run and score the touchdown to take the lead, 15-12 lead. On the next possession, the Buckaroos had the ball and were executing a great drive down the field with 39 seconds left in the half.

On an option to the right, quarterback Camden Escalon faked the pitch and scored the touchdown making the score 20-15 with 33 seconds left in the half.

A near touchdown on a kickoff return gave the Bearcats the ball at the Buck’s 18-yard line. A block in the back negated the touchdown and gave the Bearcats the ball, deep in Buck’s territory, with 21 seconds left in the half.

The Bearcats scored the touchdown on a pass to the end zone, making the score 21-20. The Bearcat’s attempt at a two-point conversion was no good after an interception by the Bucks in the end zone, keeping the score at 21-20.

The Bearcats were unable to get a first down conversation on the first possession of the half as the Bucks defense adjusted during halftime.

On the first play of the offensive possession for the Bucks, Ruiz took another toss and ran 50 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion by the Bucks was no good and the Bucks led 26-21 with 8:04 in the third quarter.

On the Bearcat’s next possession, a long drive scored the touchdown and gave the visiting team, the lead 27-26, with 2:13 left in the third quarter.

With both teams adjusting after the half, the Bearcat’s held a one-point lead for the majority of the fourth quarter. The Bucks begin to put together a successful drive with 3:03 left in the game.

King scored his second touchdown on a short run and the Bucks took the lead with the 2:57 remaining in the game. The Bucks were successful on the two-point conversion to make the score 34-27.

On the Bearcat’s drive to take the lead, an interception by Braye Cantrell ended the game-tying drive for the Bearcats.

With the ball and a third and five from Buck’s 46 yard-line, the Bucks were stopped, bringing up fourth and seven, and forced a punt with 1:23 left in the fourth quarter.

A shanked punt gave the Bearcats the ball in Buck’s territory, with 30 seconds left in the game and the ball on the 31.

On third and four, the Bearcats gained a huge first down and moved the ball to the Buck’s 12-yard line. A spike on first down to stop the clock, bought up second and long, deep in Buck’s territory.

On third and long with seven seconds left in the ball game, the Bucks received a game-ending sack from Jordan Robertson.

The Buck’s junior varsity team moved to 1-1 on the season. The Buck’s JV team will travel to Cisco next Thursday to play the Loboes.
