What. A. Game.

The Breckenridge Buckaroos lost a nailbiter to the district’s top team Friday night in Wall, as the Hawks bested the Bucks 28-22. Both teams got off to hot starts, as both teams in the first half consistently stopped the other, scored and forced turnovers.

Though, the Bucks left a lot out on the field Friday, as they had three drives that were close to touchdowns, but did not result in any points. One of them was a touchdown called back for a holding that they could not score again. Another was a turnover on downs after a failed fourth down inches away from a score. Another drive ended after an interception. All three drives occurred in the first half.

However, the defense came up with two interceptions on the game, and were able to score a safety in the first half. At halftime, the score was 15-14 in favor of the Bucks. Momentum seemed split at this point, but had been on the Bucks side towards the end of the second quarter, as the Bucks fell behind 14-6, but were able to score nine unanswered points thanks to the defense’s safety and touchdown subsequently by the offense.

The second half was a little more mistake free, but also saw more defense. The game went into the fourth tied 22-22. Coach Casey Hubble gathered the team as the quarter started and emphasized if they can win the quarter, they win the game. The Bucks were able to finish out their defensive drive and get the ball back. They drove nearly 80 yards and ate more than half the quarter away, but missed a field goal attempt.

The Hawks got the ball and were able to score, but missed the extra point. This left the Bucks with two minutes to play, and a chance to win the game if they could score and make the extra point.

The Bucks drove down the field and put themselves at the Hawks 16-yard-line with one play remaining. Quarterback Kevin Franco was pressured from his left side and was unable to escape it, resulting in a sack and the end of the game.

The Bucks fall to 3-6 after the loss and are now 1-3 in district. Wall is 6-2 and on top of the district at 4-0. The Bucks will close out district play next week against Clyde, who is both 3-6 overall and 1-3 in district, just like the Bucks. With this loss, the Bucks season is on life support, and a playoff berth remains unlikely.
