Bucks lose to Nocona in double OT

Wed, 01/27/2021 - 5:00 am

The Bucks had their hands full against the Nocona Indians Friday, Jan. 15, on their home court. The hard-fought defensive contest between the two teams edged out to the Indians due to late foul shots in double overtime.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied up at 8-8, with two buckets from Jerry Lawson #35 and one each from Jonas Arellano #14 and Jayton Hash #15.

The second quarter started off with a three-pointer from Arellano and then Lawson stole the ball and was fouled. Lawson made both of his foul shots to extend the Bucks lead by five points, 13-8. However, the Indians quickly sunk their own three-pointer to make it 13-11. Just before the half-time buzzer, Nathan Lechner #13 popped in a bucket to help the Bucks lead the Indians 15-11, at half-time. It was a very defensive game and no wide-open sprints by either team.

Beginning of the second half Lawson started to lose some ground guarding the Indians’ #8 player. He delivered two baskets past Lawson for the Indians to climb to 17-15. The Bucks returned with one bucket to tie the game, but the Indians subsequently made another three-pointer to retake the lead, 17-18. It wasn’t long before Hash made another bucket for the Bucks and the score was 19-20, with the Indians dumping in a basket of their own before the end of the third quarter to make it 19-20. The Indians had a razor-thin lead going into the final fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw a flurry of activity by both teams to claim or re-claim the lead. Finally, it was tied at 27-27 at 1:13 left in the fourth quarter. Lechner let loose another of his three-pointers for the night for the Bucks to reclaim the lead 30-27. The Indians were able to drop in another three-pointer to tie the score 30-30 at the end of regulation time.

The first OT was a four-minute period with Lechner dropping in a three-pointer matched by the Indians. Both teams stepped up their defense to prevent any further scoring during that four-minute period. The teams went into a second OT.

The Indians quickly dropped a three-pointer to lead 30-33. Anson Rodgers #24 dropped in a bucket and was fouled, but did not make his foul shots. The Indians still had a thin onepoint lead, 32-33.

Despite a bucket by Lawson, the Bucks lost on foul shots by the Indians, 34-38.

The Bucks fall to a record of 2-3 in District 7. The Nocona Indians will be 2-2. The City View Mustangs sit at the top of District 7 undefeated at 5-0, just ahead of Bowie at a 5-1 record.
