The Breckenridge Buckaroos boys Varsity team ended their three-game losing skid with a win against the Millsap Bulldogs Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Breckenridge ISD Athletic and Fine Arts Center.
The hometown crowd was larger than usual to cheer on the Lady Bucks, who have a four-game winning streak and clinched a spot in the playoffs.
The Bucks began with a two backto-back, three-pointers by Jonas Arellano (3) to lead 6-3. Kevin Franco (5) added a foul shot and Justin Bell (20) plopped in his own three-pointer with 3:18 left in the first quarter. The Bucks led 10-3. Bell added a bucket along with one from Aaryn Medina (23) and a foul shot and the Bucks led 15-11 and then it was all tied up 15-15. The Bulldogs went ahead 15-18 and then were stuck at 18 points the rest of the first quarter.
Meanwhile, the Bucks went on a scoring rampage led by a three-pointer from Gerardo Palacios (10), a basket from Owen Woodward (13), another three-pointer from Arellano, two more three-pointers from Medina and ended with Medina sinking a bucket for the Bucks. By the end of the first quarter, the Bucks had accumulated 16 unanswered points to lead 32-18.
To start the third quarter, Palacios quickly added two more three-pointers and then Woodward stuck two in the basket and Arellano added another three along with a layup in the bucket. The Bucks led 42-24, an 18-point lead at 2:59 in the third quarter. Medina added two buckets, Arellano added two buckets along with one from Bell and a foul shot to lead the Bucks 51-27 at the end of the third quarter.
The Bucks began the fourth quarter with a substantial lead of 24 points. Levi Lechner (22) added a bucket and a foul shot› and Franco got two points followed by a bucket from Woodward to extend the lead to 58-29.›At that point, the Bulldogs sent a flurry of baskets to the target and made it 58-34.
The Bucks woke up after a non-productive short period with a three-pointer from Palacios, two points from Arellano, two from Medina plus a foul shot and then Medina hit another three. The Bucks were not finished and added a bucket from Franco, another three-pointer from Palacios and a final bucket from Woodward to finish at 78-39 and a victory.
Arellano led the scoring with 22 points, Medina had 21, Palacios had 14, Woodward had nine, Bell had six, Lechner and Franco both had three each.
The Bucks beat the Paradise Panthers 51-44 on Friday, Feb. 1 and improved their district record to 5-6.
