The Breckenridge Buckaroo Varsity basketball team lost to the Tolar Rattlers Tuesday, Jan. 22,›before a home crowd at the Breckenridge Athletic and Fine Arts Facility.

The Rattlers jumped off to a 0-9 score before Jonas Arellano (3) dropped in a three-pointer for the Bucks at 3:43 of the first quarter.

The Bucks made two more buckets in quick succession to bring the score to 7-9 with 2:02 left in the quarter. Both teams made another basket respectively with 1:06 left the quarter. Owen Woodward (13) got one of those buckets and a foul shot to take the score to 10-11 and then the Bucks added another basket to take it to 12-11, at the end of the first quarter and a slim lead. Meanwhile, the Bucks kept the Rattlers from making any buckets of their own for the last minute-and-a-half by tightening up their defensive configuration.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Gerardo Palacios (10) stole the ball away and the Bucks took the lead for the first time, with 7:32 in the quarter. Both made another basket each and it was 14-13, with the slim lead maintained by the Bucks. The Rattlers picked up a foul and the score was now tied 14-14, with 6:17 in the second quarter remaining. The Rattlers got their own three-pointer and picked up two foul shots and leapt into the lead 14-19. The Bucks quickly got a bucket of their own and then Arellano plopped in his second three-pointer of the game and once again the score was tied, at 19-19 with 3:17 in the second quarter.

No sooner had the crowd turned their heads to the opposite end of the court and there was another three-pointer dropped in for the Bucks from Arellano and then another Buckaroo dropped a three-pointer and the score was at 25-19.

The Rattlers got two baskets close together and at half-time, the score was 25-23 in favor of the Bucks by a basket.

At 7:17 in the third quarter, the Bucks made another two points and a foul shot from Woodward. The Rattlers added another three-pointer, which set the score at 28-26.

The Bucks quickly added another bucket and managed to stave off attempts from the Rattlers to score and at 6:32, keeping the score at 30-26.

Then the Rattlers went on a scoring barrage by collecting two buckets and a three-pointer and a few other buckets to acquire the lead with 4:12 left in the third quarter, at 30-39. After that, the Rattlers continued their scoring barrage with three more quick baskets. The Bucks only answer was one basket to take the score to 32-45, with 2:12 left in the third quarter, which was maintained until the end of the third quarter.

The Rattlers were unstoppable from that point and even dunked the ball with one bucket and then another three-pointer was sunk.›The Bucks were able to get three baskets during that period so not exactly idle but not able to match the Rattlers scoring barrage. Woodward and Palacios fouled out during the final minutes of the fourth quarter but not before Palacios added another bucket and a foul shot of his own and Woodward went to the charity stripe but missed both his shots.

The last few points by the Rattlers were foul shots which they sank very well and added to the score.

The final score was 42-57 and a loss for the Bucks. However, the JV White won 37-35, with a last minute shot by Nathan Lechner to break the tie and get the win for the all-freshman team. There was no score available from the JV Green game. The Bucks Varsity is now 3-5 in district and 14-12 overall. The Bucks were ranked behind Brock (1), Peaster (2) and Tolar (3). Their last two losses have been to Peaster and Tolar. The Bucks were set to play Boyd there, Friday, Jan. 25 and then back home against Millsap on Tuesday, Jan. 29.› On Friday, Feb. 1, the Bucks will play Paradise there and then will be back home again on Tuesday, Feb. 5 to play the Brock Eagles. It will be senior night for the Lady Bucks.

The Lady Bucks and Bucks will be at home Tuesday, Feb. 5, as the Lady Bucks end their regular district schedule and await the playoffs. The Bucks will still have two more games on their schedule against Jacksboro and Peaster, which will be senior night for the Bucks on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at home.
