The Breckenridge Bucks Basketball team got off to a big splash to begin the 2020-21 season with two wins against the Abilene Hawks of Abilene Christian Academy, 44-34 and the Bellevue Eagles shootout, 64-42.

On Friday, Nov.13, the Bucks hosted the Abilene Hawks with new head coach Brent Lucas and his two assistant coaches, Will Doty and Brandon Lucas.

Both teams started slowly with no buckets until 5:38 of the first quarter when #5 Zeke Castillo hit two foul shots from the charity stripe for the first two points of the game. Jonas Arellano #3 popped in a quick one to the bucket. The score is now 4-0 with no buckets for the visitors until way up in the first quarter. Meanwhile, #3 Arellano got loose once again and added another two points to make it 6-0 at 1:23 of the first quarter. That shot was followed by one from #32 Jonathan Trejo, who retrieved a rebound under the Bucks’ basket and tossed it in for another two points and the score was 10-0.

Finally, the Hawks squeezed in a bucket and a foul shot to make it 8-3. Nathan Lechner #13 sent his own shot for two points with 30 seconds left in the first quarter and the Bucks led 12-3. Lechner added a foul shot to make it 13-3 at the end of the quarter.

The Hawks began the second quarter and sunk a bucket, which was answered by another quick bucket from #22 Sean Cooksey extending the score, 13-5.

The Buckaroo buckets continued to pour in during the quarter with two from #24 Anson Rodgers and two from #3 Arellano. The Hawks managed to squeeze in two more buckets leading 21-9 at 2:21 of the second quarter. Jayton Hash #23 added a bucket and #22 Cooksey added a foul shot and with 40 seconds remaining in the half. Arellano #3 popped in another bucket to match the Hawks bucket on the other end and the score at halftime was 27-11.

The Bucks continued to pour on the heat in the third quarter, but the Hawks began to get more consistent and that quarter ended at 33-23.

The fourth quarter saw Castillo, Arellano, Trejo and Jerry Lawson all contributed buckets to fend off the assault by the Hawks to end the game at 44-34.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, the Bucks faced off against the Bellevue Eagles. Rodgers #24 got the scoring started with a bucket and a foul shot followed by a bucket by #23 Hash and a bucket from #3 Arellano. Castillo #5 followed shortly with another Buckaroo bucket to make the score 11-2, at 5:39 of the first quarter.

The Bucks poured on the hot coals and quickly added three more buckets in rapid succession with Cooksey sinking a bucket and two more from Lechner. That performance was followed by a three-pointer from Arellano, which was followed by another three-pointer from Lechner and one from Cooksey. Johnny Almonce #14 added a bucket followed by one from Castillo and at 37 seconds left in the half, Trejo sunk another bucket followed by one from Rodgers and a bucket by the Eagles. The score at the end of the first quarter was 32- 8. The Bucks were sailing down the floor and dropping them pretty quickly.

The second quarter saw the Bucks slow down their assault and allowed the Eagles to make it to 18 points and then continued to score more buckets to end the third quarter 53-27.

The reserves got plenty of playing time in the fourth quarter and the score mounted to end comfortably at 64-42 and a second win for the weekend of basketball.
