Coach Hubble speaks about the new season

Wed, 09/05/2018 - 12:00 am

Athletic Director and Head Buckaroo football coach Casey Hubble spoke about his expectations for the season and talked about how the team has progressed from last year’s district championship.

“Last year at this time we were introducing a new offensive scheme to the players,” Hubble said. “This year, we are much ahead of where we were last year at this time, with more familiarity of the offensive plays. We have returning players at key positions and that helps the overall picture for us.”

Talking about the strong points of the team this year,Coach Hubble said the competition in practice has driven productivity.

“I believe in competition for positions and we have 29 players this year versus last year at 23 for the varsity,” Hubble said. “We also have JV Green and a JV White teams, with freshman on both teams. Day to day practice and competing for positions helps a team get better.”

Hubble said he expects the team to be competitive this year and make a deep playoff run. But to accomplish that, they have to achieve consistency.

“I think this team is on the verge of doing great things,” Hubble said. “Consistency is what we have to work on. Be where your feet are now. I often say ‘Make now, the now.’”

Consistency is something Hubble has echoed to his players, on and off the football field.

“I encourage each player to be present in the moment and take responsibility for their actions, their position, on that play whether it be special teams or in the classroom, be there.”

The Bucks have had two scrimmages, which were against Vernon and Holliday.

The first test for the Buckaroo varsity was the game with Jacksboro, at Tiger Stadium Friday, Aug. 31. The JV teams also played Jacksboro on Aug. 30.

The first Buckaroo Varsity home game of the season is against the Comanche Indians at 7:30 Friday, Sept. 7.
