Wed, 03/31/2021 - 5:00 am

Prior to the Bucks Varsity game, the Bucks JV squared off against the Bearcats JV team from Henrietta. BHS alumni, Jake Escalon, was behind the catcher at home plate calling the game. His baptism under fire came on the very first pitch which hit his shoulder. For those who don’t know, Jake was the catcher for the Bucks and now plays baseball at Tarleton State Univ. Escalon Field, where the Bucks play, was named after his grandfather, Dee Escalon, who coached many little Bucks over a few decades.

Marco Jaramillo #15 was pitching for the Bucks JV and got two strikeouts right off the bat. The third out was made by a catch in rightfield.

Karter Smalley #13 led off for the JV Bucks and popped up to third for the first out. Franco #6 hit to second for the second out of the inning. Becera #7 followed with a walk. Next, in an ironic twist, the opposing pitcher hit the batter, Jaramillo #15, the JV Bucks pitcher. Austin Hill #10 was the next batter for the JV Bucks and he hit toward the first baseman, who dropped the ball, but was able to make the throw to home in time to catch the Bucks runner, Becera for the third out.

Jaramillo continued to zing in the pitches for three straight strikeouts in the top of the second inning for the JV Bucks.

Bernal #11 started out for the JV Bucks with a nice ball over the head of the shortstop and well into left field for a nice single, which he stretched to a double and was safe at second. Marin #12, popped up to second for the first out of the inning. Hernandez #9 stepped aside at the plate as the runner came in on a passed ball for the first run for the JV Bucks, Bernal. The next batter was Aaron Moore #3, who has big brother, Evan Moore, on the varsity. He made a hit to first, but the first baseman dropped the ball which allowed him to be safe. Meanwhile, Hernandez scored for the Bucks second run. Zeke Castillo #21, who normally plays with the varsity was helping out and had a nice hit past first base into right field. That hit allowed Moore to score. The JV Bucks led (3-0). Smalley is back up to bat for the JV Bucks and got a hit past the second baseman into right field and Castillo moved around to third, poised to score. Franco had a hard-hit ball just fair past the first baseman and stretched it into a triple that cleared Castillo and Smalley to score. Becera had a ball hit just fair, but was put out at first for the second out of the inning, but it allowed Franco to score. Jaramillo was the next batter and he struck out. At the end of two innings, the JV Bucks led (6-0). A six-run inning for the JV Bucks.

In the top of the third inning, Jaramillo successfully pitched three strikeouts at the Henrietta batters for eight strikeouts in the three innings of play.

In the bottom of the third inning, the first batter for the JV Bucks is Hill, who went down swinging. Next up is Bernal, who hit to first, but got on safely as the first baseman juggled the ball. Jaramillo had a hard hit ball to left field, which he stretched into a triple and helped Bernal score for the JV Bucks, (7-0). Hernandez was up next and he hit a hard grounder past the second baseman into right field, which allowed Jaramillo to score and it was (8-0) for the JV Bucks.

Moore was the next JV Buckaroo to bat and he had three balls called when there was a passed ball error on the catcher, but he managed to recover and get the runner out at home plate. Moore was put out at first for the third out of the inning and the JV Bucks led (8-0) at the end of three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Henrietta JV Bearcats were quickly dispensed with three quick outs on two bunt attempts and a ball hit to the left fielder, caught by Bernal.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Coach Marin attempted to get in a few more Buckaroo players and there was another pitcher in for the Henrietta JV Cubs.

Veteran, Castillo, earned a walk and then quickly stole to second base. Next up is Smith #18, who went down swinging for the out. Smalley got a hit, but was put out at first. Brey Cantrell #17 was the next JV Buckaroo and he earned a walk. He was followed by Becera, who also got a walk. Jackson Curtis #1 was the next JV Buckaroo up to bat and he earned a walk, which forced in a run to home plate for the JV Bucks. The last batter for that inning was Eric Williamson who also went down swinging with the bases loaded.

In the top of the fifth inning, Jaramillo dispenses with two more strikeouts for the JV Cubs and a third batter is put out at first to end the game. The JV Bucks won this one (9-0) with six runs in the second inning, two more in the third and another in the fourth inning.
