The Lady Bucks improved to 20 wins on the season after holding on to defeat the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets, 58-56, last Friday at home.

The game came down to the final seconds, but the Lady Bucks held on for the victory.

“We had to keep (Boyd’s) Peytin Bullard off the paint,” Breckenridge Lady Bucks coach, Chris Robertson, said. “She is a great player. We needed to keep her going east and west instead of north and south.”

The Lady Bucks jumped out to an early lead at the end of the first quarter, after 3-pointers by Mariah Baladez and Lexi Shields. Solid defense and the use of 3-point shots in the corner were key in getting the firsthand lead. At the end of the first half, the Lady Bucks led 26-18.

The second half saw a continuance of solid defense from the Lady Bucks with a steal from Kylee Willis, leading a fast break layup for Baladez.

During the third quarter, Breckenridge extended their lead, 43-33, after a corner three from Shields.

However, the Yellowjackets were able to climb back into the contest, after a solid second half from Bullard.

With 42 seconds left in the game, the Lady Bucks were up, 57-53. A free throw extended their lead, but a quick 3-pointer by the Lady Yellowjackets, with five seconds left, brought the game closer.

The Lady Bucks were able to make another free throw, not allowing enough time for Boyd to respond.

“This is the 20th win of the season and we worked extremely hard to get here,” said Coach Robertson. “These girls are doing great things. We got to 19 wins last year and 20 this year, so I’m proud of this group. We have to work out a couple of bugs, but it’s a long season and I hope to finish strong.”

The Lady Bucks will play Paradise Lady Panthers at home next Friday, Feb. 7.
