The Lady Bucks faced down the Early Lady Longhorns in a non-district game Friday, Dec. 28, after a few days off over Christmas. The Lady Bucks had played the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets back as school was dismissed on Friday, Dec. 21, which they won in a close one, 50-47. So, this game was just to get their skills back up to playing form as they returned to district play, Friday, Jan. 4, at Millsap, against the Lady Bulldogs.

Prior to the Lady Bucks varsity game, the JV girls polished off the Early JV girls, 28-19.

The Lady Bucks jumped out to a fast lead 8-4 and then the fans saw the Lady Longhorns gradually creep up to an 11-8 score, which then tied 11-11 and 12-12. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bucks were behind by one point, 13-14.

As the second quarter began, the fans observed the Lady Bucks go into attack mode as Madison Stanley (10) got two points, Morgan Hash

(2) added two and Alyssa Reyes (5) added her own layup for two more to take back the lead 19-14, at 7:03 of the second quarter, while keeping the Longhorns from scoring any points.

At 6:08, Reyes had a successful steal, which added two more for a 21-16 score. Then Stanley had her own steal but no points as did Hash with no success. The Longhorns finally collected a basket, which took the score to 21-18. Stanley’s steal and successful layup shot added two more for the Lady Bucks, which now looked like a close battle to the finish, as the Lady Longhorns got in a basket and a foul shot to close the gap to 23-21. Reyes added her own basket to take the Lady Bucks to 25-23, as the Longhorns added their own two points.

Reyes added two more and Stanley tucked in another layup and a foul shot to take the Lady Bucks to 30-23 and then 30-25.

Coach Robertson sent in the reserves to give the starters a breather. That brought in Aailyah Lawson

(24), Baylee Young (21), Alexis Navarro (35), Mariah Baladez (12) and Yatziri Trejo (11). They were able to maintain the status quo with a score of 30-26 at the half. Immediately at the second half whistle, the Lady Bucks demonstrated their resolve to win with Stanley collecting two points and two foul shots and then Kylee Willis (25) got into the scoring column with her own two added to the mix and two baskets from the Longhorns with the score at 36-29, at the end of the third period.

As the fourth period began, Baladez added her own name to the scoring column with a basket and two foul shots to take the score to 40-29.

The Lady Longhorns managed to get a basket and a couple of foul shots to take the score to 40-33, at 6:57 in the fourth quarter. Carly Tennison (15) got her own shot added to the scoring column, which opened up the floodgates for her to follow Willis with two more points and Tennison another bucket and a foul shot to elevate the score to 47-37 with 1:31 to go in the game, with the Lady Bucks clearly in charge.

Before the game ended, Willis added another bucket and the Lady Longhorns added one more to end the defensive battle under the basket.

The game ended with a 49-39 victory for the Lady Bucks, which gives them an overall season record of› 12-10. The Lady Bucks return to district play Friday, Jan. 4, at Millsap, which is a team they have not played this season. Then, the Lady Bucks will play at home to host the Paradise Lady Panthers, Tuesday, Jan. 8.

Meanwhile the Bucks played in the Eula Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament, where they lost to Holliday in their first matchup, as they were missing two starters; Jonas Arellano and Owen Woodward, but beat their next two opponents: Christoval in a close one, 54-51. Kevin Franco was the leading scorer in that game with 14 points, Gerardo Palacios had 11 points and Justin Bell had eight points. The Bucks then faced down the Early Longhorns, 60-49, with one of their starters back, Owen Woodward, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. Palacios had 14 points and four assists and Levi Lechner got six points, five assists and four rebounds.

The Bucks played the Millsap Bulldogs Friday, Jan. 4, in Millsap and then will host the Paradise Panthers at home, Tuesday, Jan 8.
