The Lady Bucks volleyball team traveled to Iowa Park to face the Lady Hawks for their latest non-district matchup Tuesday, Aug. 19. While they remained competitive early in each set, the Lady Bucks ultimately fell two sets to zero, losing 25-17 and 25-11.
“I was really proud of them in this game. We just dug ourselves a hole that we can’t get out of,” Head Coach Latisha Clark said. “That seems to be what we’re trying to fix. Even when we’re down, we can still come back.”
Breckenridge came out with a lot of energy in the first set and scored the first point of the evening before getting out to a 3-1 lead. After some back and forth scoring, the Lady Hawks wound up tying it up at 6 points a piece.
The struggles then began defensively for the Lady Bucks. After the score was tied at 8 points all, the Lady Hawks took their first lead and went on a run to stretch their lead to 14-9. After a couple of unforced errors, the Lady Bucks got back to 15-11.
However, the Lady Hawks then went on another run as their lead was extended to 20-11. The Lady Bucks did not go down without a fight. They stayed within striking distance and got to within 22-17 before Iowa Park closed out the set on a three point run.
“In the first game (set), I really liked the energy because [Iowa Park] is a really good team,” Clark said. “We played really well, had good hits, good energy. This is all just preparing for district. I think we are improving each time out.”
The Lady Bucks got out to an early lead in the second set as well, scoring the first two points including the second on an ace by Analia Palacios. The Lady Hawks then tied it at two points apiece before taking a 3-2 lead.
The energy rose back up to the surface for the Lady Bucks as they went on a five-point run, which included two aces by Kamden Tidwell, to take a 7-3 lead. The run ended when a hit went out and the Lady Hawks then went on a big run of their own – this one of nine points as it was 13-8.
Clark took a timeout when Iowa Park took the lead at 9-8. The Lady Bucks scored two straight points, followed by three straight by the Lady Hawks to make the score 16-10 Iowa Park. Breckenridge scored their final point of the match before the Lady Hawks closed it out on another nine-point run.
Overall, LaKyla Barkley led the team with four successful kills, followed by Lane Bartoskewitz with three that scored immediately and two others that ultimately led to scores, Tidwell had two immediate scoring kills and two that led to scores and Ava Russell had two kills.
