The Breckenridge Lady Bucks volleyball team took the short drive to Albany High School to partake in pool play of the Albany Volleyball Tournament and came away with a split of their two games. With the split, they advance out of pool play to the gold bracket, taking place Saturday, Aug. 30.
Pool play of the tournament took place Thursday, Aug. 28 and the Lady Bucks were placed in Pool B out of four pools.
They took the first match in a winner-take-all third set against Aspermont before dropping the second set in another winner-take-all third set against Jim Ned JV. The Lady Bucks got behind the eight ball in the first match, as Aspermont went on a 13-point run to take a 13-3 lead. Breckenridge looked flat-footed defensively and could not stop the point barrage.
However, the Lady Bucks refused to go down easily, getting a six-point scoring streak of their own with Sofia Lopez holding serve and recording three aces in a row.
After the point streak ended, the Lady Bucks were down, 17-12. Then after a four-point streak, the Lady Bucks got to 19-16 before going on a seven-point streak to take their first lead at 23-21. Following an Aspermont timeout, they scored two points in a row to tie the score at 23.
Breckenridge scored a defensive point before Aspermont tied it back up at 24 after a Lady Buck serve went out. The back-and-forth scoring continued as the Lady Bucks scored for the 25-24 lead before Aspermont tied it again.
The Lady Hornets were in line for the win in the opening set with one more score after taking a 26-25 lead, but the Lady Bucks scored defensively and then two straight offensively to take the set 28-26, including the 27th point coming from another ace from Lopez.
The second set was similar in point action; after a seven-point run by Aspermont the Lady Bucks were down 10-3. Breckenridge again got back into the action in this set, going on a nine-point run to get to within 16-14. After four more points from Aspermont, the Lady Bucks trailed 20-16 and went on their own point run to tie the score at 20 and ultimately take a one-point lead.
The Lady Hornets, though, scored five points in a row to take the set, 25-21, and tie the match. In the decisive third set, which only went to 15 points, The Lady Bucks were able to put their foot on the gas, scoring six straight points after falling behind early to get a 6-4 lead.
Aspermont scored two in a row to tie the score at six and Breckenridge then scored five straight to take an 11-6 lead. The Lady Hornets scored three more points after the defensive score to get back to within one at 11-10. The Lady Bucks got three more points in a row to get one point away from taking the set and the match.
Aspermont scored on defense to keep it alive, but the Lady Bucks stepped up defensively as well to win 15-11 and take the match. In the second match against Jim Ned JV, the Lady Bucks took an early 11-8 lead before allowing Jim Ned to snag a 13-11 lead.
Breckenridge came back to take an 18-15 lead and ultimately 21-18 and 22-19. After the team traded points for a while, Jim Ned scored two straight to tie the set at 22. The Lady Bucks then ultimately got on another point streak to take the set, 25-23.
The Lady Bucks fell behind in the second set, 5-1, before coming back to take a 9-8 lead aided by a four-point streak. After back-and-forth scores, Breckenridge had a two-point and a three-point streak to take a 15-13 lead. After that the wheels fell off, as Jim Ned went on a 10 point streak to take a 22-15 lead.
The Lady Bucks scored three more to get to 22-18, but Jim Ned closed the set out, 25-18 after a defensive and two offensive scores. The Lady Bucks were up 6-3 in the second set, but a three-point run and a nine-point run led Jim Ned to a 15-8 win in the set and a 2-1 match win.
Bracket play for the tournament takes place Saturday, Aug. 30, with the top three teams from pool A, B, C and D advancing to the gold bracket and third-place teams advancing to the silver bracket.
The Lady Bucks advanced to the gold bracket and will face Abilene Christian School in the opening game starting at 10 a.m. in the auxiliary gym at Albany High School. The winner of that matchup will face the winner of Jim Ned Varsity and Rotan at 12 p.m.
